Anyone who likes folk music of the Nick Drake, Sandy Denny school needs to get themselves Let No Man Steal Your Thyme - Shelagh McDonald. All known recordings by a late 60s early 70s english folk singer. Very good voice, like a cross between Sandy Denny and Joni Mitchell, also very accomplished on piano and guitar. Best songs for me would be Stargazer and Dowie Dens of Yarrow.
As seems de rigeur for folk singers of this period she had a short career ending strangley and tragically. She basically produced two great albums then disappeared without a trace for 35 years after suffering a REALLY bad acid trip which weirdly ruined her angelic voice. She did eventually show up again in 2005 after having read an article about herself in a Scottish newspaper, she'd been hiding somewhere in the western isles of Scotland.

Good knowledge Bonjoy, I'll have to check that out.

Lately I've been listening to the following, all of which I would wholeheartedly recommend:

Drive by Truckers - The Dirty South (as the name suggests: classic southern Americana)
Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat (exquisite vocal delivery and a rack of excellent songs)
Roddy Frame - Surf (one of the most eloquent songwriters of this or any generation - just amazing)
Loose Fur - Born again in the USA (one for the Wilco fans - an effortlessly brilliant side project with Jeff Tweedy and Jim O'Rourke)
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - Streetcore (poignant and emotional stuff from the late lead singer of the Clash. Pretty rockin too. Webbo should get this, if he hasn't already.)

I'll second the Joe Strummer and the mescaleros, though the other half always tells me to turn it off.

Anyone mentioned Hot Chip yet? Got the album off Cowboyhat last week after hearing one track on a compilation. Oddly enough, found it barely listenable at first but after five or so plays (experience has taught me you have to persevere with the really good stuff) I'm a total convert.

Enjoying geeting more into new music again recently. Finally folk seem to be realising that the further dance and rock are separated, the more boring they become.

You might like (if you don't own it already)  Bad Timing by Jim O'Rourke.  Came out about a decade ago, but has been recently re-released.  Lots of slow slightly off-the-wall fingerpicking.  For fans of Americana...

Anyone else heard Barra Head?  A small-fry Danish band.

http://www.playrec.dk/barrahead/   The LP's  Songs & Departures  &  We Are Your Numbers are blindingly good.  This band is one well kept secret...

ok, the best tunes that i've purchased recently:

bold to sacrifice - cristian padararu (brilliantly mellow breaks)
probably - flex and nilsson (cool techy house)
ride - 2 paht cunts (more cool breaks stuff) (that should obviously read 2 phat cunts)
right before my eyes - southside hustlers
50k - def inc

i predict that they'll be all over the compilations in 6 months time.

and the gu10 set is alright too. the first disc wasn't that special, but disc 2 is stuck in my car stereo...

listening to the headcase ladz whilst dropping down onto the A55 from Wirral-way is pretty ace. Miles better than Goldie Lookin Chain and way cooler!

I quite like Hot Chip - "boy from school" is a sweet track and the others are all really good fun, though pretty fucking bizzare. Both albums worth a listen fo sho.

Those that like Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss should check out:

The Eagles of Death Metal - 'Death by Sexy'

It's Josh Hommes other outfit and some of the stuff is ace (and sounds nothing like the band name suggests)- Dirty rock you can (ahem) dance to.

Also good but not particularly new, is The Shins 'Oh inverted world'. Good mellow stuff, particularly 'New Slang' which I always seem to find myself humming.

Didn't realise Josh Homme was in EODM - you learn something new every day eh? THey're first, self titled album is awesome too, like you say, proper dirty rock.

Yup - Oddly enough, he plays the drums under the name of Carlos Von Sexron iirc.

Yeah, I really like "One Thing"

Here's a very interesting video about the origin and use of the Amen Break:

http://nkhstudio.com/pages/amen_mp4.html

If you have any early Hip-Hop / Hardcore / Jungle then you will have heard this a million times and it's interesting to see where it came from and how it was used. Also explores wider issues of sampling and copyright.

Appropriately, the whole soundtrack to the video is played from a dubplate.

Ok, I posted the above a while ago - the guy has done another one, this time on the TB 303.

http://nkhstudio.com/pages/bassline_mp4.html

Very interesting if you're a fan of electronica.

Grime / dubstep / garage anyone?

Am after a bit of a taster of the bassier, instrumental side. Not interested in vocal grime as it sounds like the biggest bunch of cock ever to me. But...

http://www.juno.co.uk/products/198328-01.htm

...someone recommended that a while ago and I missed out on getting it, God knows why but I quite like that sound of that. Sort of tending to the breaks side almost. So, anyone got any recommendations?  :-\

this is worth checking out;

http://www.mountainrescueradio.com/

it's done by a friend of mine, but I'm not promoting him just on that alone. It is actually good. Nice mixes, introducing you to something old, something new, something unfamiliar, something sweet. Check it out.  (right click and save as to get the mixes)

Nouvelle Vague - "Bande A Part" (Peacefrog)

2nd album from the bizarre but lovely Nouvelle Vague.

French lounge act cover Brit 80's New Wave, Punk and pop.

Last album was great Ibiza poolside music last summer and this one promises more of the same. Great stuff.

Bubba, I like that Roots Manuva mix, nice.  The misses is like, who are the Sugarhill Gang.  Bless her.

Currently listening to Veneer by Jose Gonzalez as well.  I downloaded the album after searching for who did the song from that Sony Advert and the rip off one from Swansea with all the fruit.  The rest of the album is quite good too, especially 'closer'.  Doesn't last long enough though in my opinion.

Those mountain rescue mixes are good too.  Quite quircky.
