#700 Funky f-f-f-f-f-ffffresh beats

Quote from: "Fiend"
Back on the hip-hop side of things which seems grossly neglected at the moment (where are Dave, Cofe and TTT?), I put the following back on the hi-fi the other day and thoroughly enjoyed:

Ugly Duckling - Combo Meal / Taste The Secret

Obviously you get the usual UD old-skool style cheerful non-gangsta funk, but this time it's wrapped in one of those themed ideas - The Meat Shake. The sort of thing that could drive one mad as a gimmick but I find it works really well, the skits are nicely done, the whole thing is just appealingly silly, and well, for me it stands up to repeated listenings.

check it word, aside from the daily "Regulate", have mostly been rockin Jay-Z's back catalogue, "Moment of truth" by Gang Starr and the last Madvillain album. Oh, and seeing Kanye live last night. He was the shizznit, if you're interested.

Yeah, I really like "One Thing"

Here's a very interesting video about the origin and use of the Amen Break:

http://nkhstudio.com/pages/amen_mp4.html

If you have any early Hip-Hop / Hardcore / Jungle then you will have heard this a million times and it's interesting to see where it came from and how it was used. Also explores wider issues of sampling and copyright.

Appropriately, the whole soundtrack to the video is played from a dubplate.

i know there are a few DJ Andy Smith fans on here, so I thought i would pass on this info from my contact at cargo:

Friday 10th March sees DJ Andy Smith start a regular bi-monthly night at Cargo with The Document Live Sessions. The live sessions showcase Andy's impeccable taste; a palette that has compiled three of the best funk, soul and hip hop compilation albums in the last 10 years in the form of The Document series. Now Mr. Smith turns his taste buds to finding the best live acts and DJ's from around the world and putting on one hell of a "funk" spread for your delectation. Grubs up.

Andy Smith is the originator of the major-label, multi-genre mix album. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut's Journeys by DJs but needed to hear more. Smith made his name as Portishead's tour DJ in the 90s and is now one of the most established and respected DJs on the international circuit.

Having sold in excess of 130,000 copies of The Document I and II, Smith has now released the eagerly anticipated The Document III on Sanctuary Records. The mix features artists as diverse as Muddy Waters, Freda Payne, Showbiz and AG, Black Sabbath and Black Grass. Other recent releases include Andy Smith's Northern Soul (BGP Records).

The Cargo night will present music from a similarly diverse field. Friday March 10th kicks off with sounds from: Your host DJ Andy Smith bringing The Document mix series flavour, Block-rocking hip-hop party DJs Eddie Rishue and John Pique (Carbon Imprints, Steady Diggin Workshop).

The live element is provided by the 60s and 70s big-band funksters The Frank Popp Ensemble, uniting modern music production and pop appeal with music styles from between 1960 and 1972 such as northern soul, R&B and funk, new funk/rock band LabRat and the B#s who will be performing their debut single Ya Mama Be Proud - out now on 7" vinyl and Brighton scratch supremo DJ Mex (Black Grass); a bona fide vinyl junkie - the kind of junkie that doesn't want help - he's happiest when he's at one with his drug of choice, vinyl. In the mid-nineties he fed his addiction by working in record shops, DJ'ing hip hop and funk breaks at seminal Brighton night Knowledge Of Self, warming up for the likes of OC, Jurassic 5 and Big L.

A great start out of the blocks for The Document Live Sessions which will see the best in funk, soul and hip-hop appear bi-monthly courtesy of Mr Andy Smith.

Don't miss it!!!

Now playing:

Bad Sector - Kosmodrom

Deep electronica / glitchesque ambient album, by an Italian act, and themed around the Russian space program, including hand numbered fancy packaging (I have 287 / 795) and a detailed booklet about said program.

Actually, I think some of you lot might like this...

kind of music related i guess...I can't claim credit for this but it's my housemate's work, while trying to generate "seafood themed" 1980s songs/albums

Something I've been looking forward to for a few weeks now... release date 20th March:

Hundred Reasons, Kill Your Own. Apparently it's a return to the style of the first album, which I much prefered... Excellent!

Not sure if its anyone on here's bag, as I never normally post about these sorts of chi-town shindigs, but as we always have fun - Sneak V's Cassius (ok so he's pretty French..sorry!) at Sankys on Sat.

Should be sweet... fix that sink!

I'm listening to Crazy by Gnarls Barkley (song from radio 1 advert) and 76:14 which is a seminal ambient album that I have only just found out about - excellent stuff.

And now for something completely different:

Battle Metal by Turisas

The sound of this album is a blend of 80's cock rock, Death Metal, and Medieval chamber music.  Most of the songs are about defeating your enemy on the field of battle and giving respect to your ancestors. In a word, genius.

Potemkin City Limits by Propagandhi

The new album by what is probably my favourite band, pretty much a must for anyone who likes hardcore, but i would recommend it to anyone who likes rock in general. The songs deal with issues from a fantasy conflict between Canada and the US to the comparison between the current US military and the Hitler youth.  The album also contains the lyrics:

Quote
Superbowl patriots cheer half-time propaganda, fake titties, tooting trumpets. “FREEDOM” is in lights and is shitting itself out of Post-Hippy “Call me Sir” Paul McCartney's multi-millionaire fucking mouth. Machine guns raised. Kegs secure. Beers held high! The (Presidential) Liar is in the house. Bono's in the house! We're DOOMED! FUCKING DOOMED! FUCKING DOOMED! FUCKING DOOMED! FUCKING DOOMED! FUCKING DOOMED! FUCKING DOOMED!

Obviously this sort of music isn't to everybody's (or anybody's) taste, but i thought it might add some diversity to the topic....

You want funky fresh beats?  Last year it was cancelled, alas...

But the Berlin Love Parade returns with a vengeance for 2006.

It surprises me that more of the 'Oompst oompst' types don't bother going.  It's not far or expensive.

Why?

a)  Techno.  24/7.  For a whole week. (plus every other genre you care to shake your ass to)

b)  Dancing girls in cling-film 'dresses'.

c)  No-one will throw you out of the club for catching 40 winks on a comfy chair (as happened to my girlfriend, in 'BED', Sheffield!  Cheeky fux!)

d)  Did I mention Dancing girls in clingfilm?

e)  It's a fucking blast.

Anyone else bothered to go before?  Anyone have any cool tales to share?

Officially it's the weekend starting July 15th.  But there are normally stacks of parties during the week before and after kick-off.  Plenty.

The Parade, well, it's fun.  You meet thousands of loons.  So many things to laugh at.

If an event can make grown men leave the haus like this, it's gotta be good.

Never been to the Love Parade but have heard many tales of utter madness - including an certain ex UK competition climber who lost his glasses and wandered round in a E frazzled daze for 24 hours before miraculously finding them again on the floor at the front of the club he'd lost them in a day before :)

Used to know a guy who DJd there to one million people. That must have been a headfuck.

Cheers, I thought it was a mate of yours or something

Yeah, DJ Heather is good too, I've got a few of her mixes.

Only ever seen Sneak live though - that might have been at Sankeys when it was the old Bugged Out.  Had some fantastic nights at Sankeys.

andi_e, Ulrich S also has done "A strangely Isolated Place".
