Piccadilly Records in Manchester runs a great album of the year list that always has stuff worth buying in time for Christmas.  Here's the Top 100 Albums of 2010 from them.

Lists like that always intimidate me, not sure where to start?? I've only heard of about 10 of the bands. The XX seem to get good reviews everywhere, might need to give them another go, was distinctly underwhelmed by the last listen though.

I've never heard of 'em either so just tend to take a punt on some which I like the sound of and am mostly pleasantly surprised.  I know what you mean though when you see them all in a long list. It can be a bit intimidating.

I see cowboyhat made it in at number 23  :P

Actually heard at least one of them as the "Fuck Buttons" is something my friend had the other week on the way to the crag.

Fuck Buttons are indeed rather good - my copy was given to me by an incarcerated friend but I must get around to purchasing a legit copy. About the only other things I noted of interest in there was the new Lindstrom and Prinz Thomas album II and something by Lindstrom and Christabelle which looks rather good.

I'm at home today and it's surprising how much of the Piccadilly List is on Spotify... so far have enjoyed the Wilco, Fever Ray and Dam Funk albums

The Camera Obscura album from that list is a great slice of swoonsome retro-pop.

If anyone likes a bit of gritty Americana then check out the new Califone album - All my friends are funeral singers. Am loving this, need to explore their back catalogue, which is pretty large (7 albums).

Not sure if this is funky or fresh, but it is damn funny...one of R-Kelly's new tracks.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is "Pregnant" - a friend played my this on the basis that it sounds like Flight Of The Concords doing a piss-take of R-Kelly. Love the backing vocals on the chorus.

Isn't that part of his Rap Opera "Trapped in the Closet"

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapped_in_the_Closet

A quick look says it might be in Chapter 15.

I think the whole thing was a bit of an intentioanl pisstake.

Cofe just put me onto Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic zeros.

Very good, like a redneck Arcade Fire.

Free leech at The Mixing Bowl, grab as much as you like and it won't count against your ratio (but uploads do ).

Used to be invite, but as far as I remember they've had membership open for some time now, although they may have temporarily closed it whilst free leech is in effect.  :-\

There's at least one user who registered on the 23rd December 2009, but that was before Free Leech started.

On the back of this:

Anyway, my recommendation:

Helios - Eingya

After hearing a remix by Stray of one fo the tunes on this album, I decided to buy it. It has a beautiful cover- a good start. Pop it in the CD player, sit back and let the audial tide wash over your toes dipping in the sea of atmospheric, ambient, pure and natural, earthy sounding electronica. I recommend this. Get it, got it? Good.

I checked out this and discovered some beautiful, deep and thoughtful music. I recommend you get on there. Highlights include Logreybeam and Sickoakes, not to mention other Helios albums and other things like Black to Comm and Grouper. Checkity check.
