The Wedding Present 'El Rey'

Just brilliant, still sounds pretty much like the Wedding Present, but while in some ways the worse for losing that lo-fi tinniness and a lot of Gedge's deadpan Leeds twang, it's 2008 now and it sounds fantastic. The steve Albini production is very evident and shines through very nicely, ta...

6 Mix from DJ Yoda 08-12-2007.

Not the usual scratch and sniff mash up, but DJ Yoda talking you through some of his fave tunes.  Good varied selection and some nice insights into his musical tastes and their origins.

EDIT - Just to be different its in mp2 format (designed for digital broadcasting) not sure what you windoze cats would need to play it (possibly Media Player will do the job).

Sounds good, am downloading now - Winamp plays .mp2 as standard, and i think wmp does too :)

Cool, thought winamp might do the job (although it needs a plugin to play ogg/vorbis).

Quite liking Seu Jorge after picking up a couple of CD's whilst in France recently on the back of the sleeve notes which indicated that he sang the portugese covers of David Bowie songs in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou which I really liked (great film by the way, highly recommend it if you've not seen it before, hilarious in a very subtle way).

Very mellow singer with a great voice.  Barely understand a word of it mind, but well worth checking out.

Useless fact but Seu Jorge also played "Knockout Ned" in the excellent City of God.

Also, if you're of an Americana, folksy bent and ain't scaried of morose violins  :boohoo: then I'd find this.

I think it's quite sublime.

Been a lot of new drum and bass CDs released recently (that's drumandbass CDs, not drum CDs and bass CDs...). Mostly a not entirely convincing bunch with many of them sounding decent enough but falling short of compelling any purchasing. Except these two which I'd recommend, a beauty and the beast pairing:

Bachelors Of Science - Science Fiction  - lush uplifting liquid stuff with plenty of soppy musical shizzle but proper enough DnB beats too. One to play to your burd.  :boohoo:  :shag:

Dom And Roland - Through The Looking Glass - this is more like sci-fi DnB, two CDs of twisted darker stuff. The first CD sounds a right mix of all sorts, some good and some bland. But head to the second CD for 12 tracks of proper rolling techstep filth, verrrry nice indeed.  :wall:  :dance1:

Excellent...

on a similar tip to the Bachelors of Science, Irish liquid god Calibre has just come up with this 2CD beast...

Good shouts there Fiend and Andi, particularly the Dom and Roland stuff, but I'll check the Calibre 'cos I haven't heard much of his stuff.  Also nice to see Juno providing the goods.  Still my favourite online provider of music.

Just to reiterate, having got this in my fiendish claws and just listened to it twice in a row, you need this in your life. Particularly the non-dnb heads who dabble in the popular offshoots of DnB. The general vibe is on the soppy radio friendly side but regardless it is just damn good. Tracks like the irresistably catchy "Songs For Lovers" and the soaring "Ice Dance" could warm the hearts of the most battle-hardened tech-stepper, whilst gems like the grimey "Sweat" and a rinsing breakage remix of "Immortal" by Alaska provide a quality balance to the album.

In other news, the first CD of the Dom and Roland album is rather good and better than expected from the samples.

DnB baby  :dance1: :dance1: :dance1:

You are going to have to work a whole lot harder to sell this to me than that McFiend.  ;)

I on the other hand have just discovered Johnny Cash - specifically this:

Excellent music and both CD's are forming part of the music collection for the trip to the Cornish Granite which starts tonight.
