The project's aim was to observe if the emotions
of sound could be transformed into the visible.
This dialogue of the aural + visual creates a silent
conversation between the work of the two artists.

On a slightly less profound tip...

New Watch the Ride mix from TC.  Well good if you like that kind of thing and aren't looking for noise that "creates a silent conversation between the work of the two artists" but want noise that "sounds like a range of hoovers, old school arcade machines and sewing machines being turned on and off in an occasionally rhythmic fashion".  It's got Sub Focus - Druggy on it and this is a really good tune.  Each of the Watch the Ride mixes that have come out have been alright.  The Zinc one from last year was pretty hot and the Scratch Perverts one, while not up to usual SPs, was pretty cool in it's own way.

Also got Back to Mine by Krafty Kuts, which is pretty good too.  Some classy hip hop, Massive Attack's awesome "Any Love" and the Incredible Bongo Band's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida".  Haven't really listened to it much but played those last two tunes about four times each.  Oh yeah, and there's Nas - Nas is Like.  Good stuff.

And the final set from the night;

Gaiser

This set is great. Better than the Audion or Magda set.  :dance1:

If you liked that, have another Gaiser set people. Turn it UP! Fuck the neighbours and their shitty dogs!

Live at the Beatport Pool Party 07

I was quite underwhelmed by this sort of stuff when i first heard it, but i really like it now...it's dirty funky dancing music - nice! is this mnml? what is mnml?

Yes it's mnml (though deeper than much I've heard).

Interesting how opinions on the same thing can be so different:  I thought it was low on funk, had no dirt at all, and I'd probably only dance to this after a proper marathon & was exhausted.  Weird, huh?

I leaves me cold, unemotional, disinterested.  C'est la vie.

mnml?  Opinions vary but I'd say it's characterised by a particularly tight mid-low freq' compressed kick w/ little or no decay; plenty of ma (space between the elements, some might say room to breathe) and one the whole there's less there than haus and tech-haus but nevertheless quite busy on the bleep.  I've long stop thinking that it's all techno, that's an out-of-date statement.

Seeing Vex'd in that tracklist reminded to revist Smart Bomb-our old house favourite.

When i first heard this sort of stuff i found it pretty boring, but i quite like it now. An acquired taste maybe? At the moment I don't really like Surgeon style stuff - i find that dark and cold...

Viva la difference, Bubs.  I'd never force anything down anyones neck, c'ept maybe my cock  ;)

Interestingly that's a common complaint about Brum style, or that it's too nerdy  :-[

Surgeon is a different animal these days - his own stuff is still dark, slightly slow minimal tech-funk; his stuff w/ British Murder Boys is industrial based and won't appeal to all.

But I've access to quite a bit of mnml - I'll post some recent stuff which you might not have heard - any pointers/faves?  mnml is vast in Germany now . . . especially Berlin.

Audion mix for those of you that don't have it.

Not the longest set in the world as I think it was a promo for Suckfish album, but good nonetheless.

Try this place Bubs:   www.mnml.nl  Should suit your requirements (if you don't already know it).

And www.swedishhousemafia.com has a fair bit of hurdy-gurdy haus/mnml.

On a mnml DJ tip then search for Andre Galluzzi - who's flying the flag quite hard for Berlin at the mo'.

In an effort to thwart Houdini's master plan to turn us all into his MNML techno-bitches I present a small selection from the ever brilliant Constellation record label. I won't bother to recommend the three big names from the label: Godspeed You Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think or A Silver Mount Zion but instead will highlight the lesser known lights that are released by them.

Firstly Exhaust - both albums are well worth checking out but their eponymous first album is probably the more accessible of the two.

The second album - Enregistruer -  is similar sounding but far more restrained overall - again highly recommended but it never quite reaches the heights of the first album for me.

Next up is Polmo Polpo's Like Hearts Swelling

"Building on foundations of multi-layered full-spectrum drones and loops, the music of Polmo Polpo is distinguished by slide guitar motifs that are more naive pop pastoral than spaghetti western."

I still remember the first time I heard this album and the feeling of just being blown away by it - the standout has to be the track Sky Histoire - it steadily builds drones on top of drones at an ever increasing volume that sounds as if "he is torturing a whale".

Lastly - 1 Speed Bike's Droopy Butt Begone

Constellation's description: "Alternating between humour and homage, Droopy Butt Begone! opens with a medley of 80's techno/hip-hop references (shameless filtered synth swells, BPM doubling, scratch samples and a shout-out dedication of sorts), giving way to delicate glockenspiel underpinned by head-bobbing beats."

Might be right - all I know is that I love this album!!

MP3 links:

Exhaust - Metro Mile End from the first album and voiceboxed from the second.

Polmo Polpo (unfortunately not Sky Histoire) - farewell

1 Speed Bike - seattle/washington/prague 00/68 chicago/nixon/reagan circle-fighting machine

Burial.   Funny thing, seems to be the talk of the underground . . .
I love Untrue, one of the best things i've heard for ages.

Just listened to this and it hit the spot pretty nicely. Would imagine it would be brilliant in the right circumstances. From what I'd read though I was expecting something much more dublike - its dubby without sounding anything much like dub!

As an antidote to all this fucking awful dark Birmingham-style techno I keep posting, I offer:

http://soundevent.de/downloads/Monopark_2_08/Deetron_@_Monopark_02022008_Part1.mp3    1:37mins / 192 kbps

http://soundevent.de/downloads/Monopark_2_08/Deetron_@_Monopark_02022008_Part2.mp3    1:37mins / 192kbps

www.deetron.com  (Tech haus / mild techno)

Sam Geiser AKA Deetron is Swiss - his sound reflects that.  I'm still undecided if I'll see him spin in a fortnight.  Too soulful for me, but enjoy, I'm listening the now.

Listening now - reminds me of the UMEK mixes I've been listening to of late, POPOF-esque.  Particulary Eclipse.   It's quite sparse but not mnml, still got quite a phat bass;  and not at all progressive *spit* in fact it represents the kind of groovy tech I like when I lighten up and stop listening to all that dark-scraping-whirring brainiac-stuff.  Lots of synthy sustain in this sound.   It sounds very eastern Europe this.

I think it would be even better on quality MDMA.  Lots of dancing w/ eyes closed stuff only to open them and embarrassingly realise your mates have been watching you zone-out for ages  ::)

I've been good to you people w/ free stuff - and I've got something extra special for you today (and I'd normally keep the good stuff all to myself ) - if you don't like it, feel free to fuck-off-and-die:

Birushanah - Akai Yami

Imagine an intense doom metal band, with traditional Japanese instruments, and a willingness to experiment, then you'd get Birushanah, featuring members of Corrupted. Their debut, "Akai Yami" is a masterpiece. Only three songs, but well worth your time.

1. "Jyodo" - 2:13
2. "Akai Yami" - 20:29
3. "Kairai" - 17:41
