Avulsion fracture
March 27, 2014, 08:36:44 am
A friend of mine suffered an avulsion fracture at the first joint of the ring finger.
It's been one month ago but managed to get a diagnosis just yesterday, still swollen and painful.
Does anyone know more about specific therapy and rehab?
Cheers.

Depends what you are talking about Nibs.  Volar plate/ check rein are very different from FDS avulsion and extensor avuslions.  I think (s)he should seek expert advice.

But when the gender (and person for that matter) is unknown is there any need to be persona(b)l(e)? Or are you using your professional bedside manner?

I had an avulsion fracture on my heel last year after falling off in the Dolomites.  Treatment for my heel was a few days in the sunny campsite with beer then back to doing multi-pitch routes followed by hiking up to huts in the Brenta for more climbing.

My understanding is that the term "avulsion" refers to a shearing or pulling away of part of the bone, so as GCW says seek professional advice for rehabilitation based on a specific diagnosis.

Cheers guys.
My friend (he) will seek specialistic advice, but despite being a doctor he doesn't know any hand specialist in his hospital.
So I asked here to gather more info, also to have alternatives to the therapies they could suggest to him.

The treatment for one injury is very different from another, so I wouldn't start trying anything without advice.  One would say this to one's friend.

Ultrasound is a dynamic imaging technique, so stills (unfortunately) aren't 100% helpful.

Hi,
I had an avulsion fracture of my left little finger when I was 12 playing rugby. Left it a week before going to hospital just thought it was strained!!
The surgeons were going to operate but once in theatre they just decided to splint my finger in a sort of half gripped position. I now have a permanently bent little finger (nearly 90 degrees) at the proximal phangeal joint. The distal joint I can still bend. Because they set it half gripped I can still use it although it does get stuck when jamming sometimes  . Should be great for pinky monos!
What basically happened is the tiny bit of bone that avulsed fused back to the joint creating an immobile joint. From what I remember (was over 25 years since I did it) the did offer to break it again, reset it and sort out the shortened tendons but since doesn't affect me didn't bother.

However, ring finger bit more vital but sure surgical / rehab techniques have improved since back in the day.
definitely needs looking at though.

Cheers

Watch out for that speed camera near Wrightington, it's not always easy to spot.

Sure they could just blag it if they're coming from Italy.

The only reason we care about speed cameras here (or everywhere else) is to be sure we look cool in the picture.

More difficult over here since the fixed ones take photo from behind - you either have to be going backwards or sideways....but I still manage  :w00t:
