The BMC is seeking an independent member to join its board (BMC Executive Committee) of eight individuals.

The BMC is the national representative body for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers in England and Wales.  The BMC has 76,000 members, employs 31 staff and has a substantial volunteer network.  Our head office is in West Didsbury, Manchester.

The Executive Committee provides strategic direction for the organisation, supports the operational management of the organisation and helps promote our activities in England and Wales.  The successful candidate will be expected to scrutinize plans and decisions in a constructive way and help guide the future development of the BMC.  General responsibilities will include:

Helping set the long term strategic direction of the BMC;
Approving the allocation of funds and monitoring operational and financial performance; and
Contributing in discussions to reach balanced and objective decisions in relation to the development and implementation of the BMC Strategic Plan.

We are seeking an individual with a strong background in the business / commerce / marketing sphere, ideally with experience in one or more of the following areas:

Membership organisations and associated business systems
Business development
Online marketing
Customer recruitment and retention

The successful candidate will become a BMC Director and a member of our Executive Committee.  The Executive meets quarterly in Manchester (usually 7.00-10.00pm on a Wednesday evening).  The Independent Director may also find it useful to attend occasional National Council meetings which take place 4-5 times per year in mountain and coastal locations across England and Wales.  Business between meetings is conducted by email and occasional conference calls with a typical weekly time commitment of 3-6 hours.  This is a voluntary position for a maximum three-year term; travel and accommodation expenses are payable.  An interest in climbing or hill walking would also be useful but not essential.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of a representative body of sport in England and Wales.  The Executive Committee is currently under-represented by females and people from ethnic communities and we would particularly welcome applications from suitably experienced candidates.

Further information, including the application process can be found at www.thebmc.co.uk/bmc-jobs-and-vacancies

For further details contact Kate Anwyl (kate@thebmc.co.uk or 0161 438 3303).

Interviews will take place on 12 March and the post begins on 26 April 2014.
