Good evening drinkers.

I would be very much appreciative of five minutes of your time if at all possible in order to complete a short whisky consumption and alcohol branding survey. Please also feel free to share the link with any of your friends, family or associates who fall into the aged 18-40 bracket (an interest in alcoholic beverages and in particular Scotch whisky would be beneficial).

This is being conducted purely for market research purposes by myself and all information submitted will be treated as strictly confidential.

Please do not hesitate to drop me a private message if you wish to ask any questions prior to undertaking the survey.

Many thanks,

Tom Mills.

Many thanks for your response mate.

Sample wise there might be a few tests in the pipeline but I'll keep you informed  :)

Too old for you huh?

Far from it mate, it's my life!

Thanks to all who have responded so far. I'm still in need of further respondents and if you can spare a matter of moments, it would be very much appreciated. Please also feel free to disseminate the link to any of your friends/family/associates.

Done.

I rarely buy a bottle for myself and tend only to drink it when socialising with one or two other partakers, so don't tend to get through a lot. I think I am very heavily influenced by brand image and tend to stick to the older, less "edgy" brands because for such a product that is as expensive as a bottle of whisky I'd want to keep my risk of not liking it low. I'd tend to only buy a bottle of something that I've tried in a pub and liked.

Not sure if that helps you or not! Good luck with whatever you're planning!

I meant I'm too old to be in your demographic.

Moose - I did consider using some of the classic forums but would prefer not to enter into any lengthy debates that would inevitably ensue from a post. Obviously I don't have to reply to any but I supposed that there might be consequences of an owner not partaking in debate. Not a million miles off from a decent number of respondents now.

Thanks very much Will and for your feedback.

Chris, I get you sorry. In attempting to validate my hypothesis that is the founding argument for my business plan case, I had sought to take into account only the responses from these people. Plenty of people have thus far responded aged 40+ and I'll of course be digesting all opinions received. I'm always delighted to hear your opinions whether in a survey or outside of it via the usual channels of communication mate 😃

Advertised it on r/whiskey

There are 11730 sippers (although response rates are likely to be a lot lower).

I'd buy any brand that was promoted with a picture of Dense looking critical, holding a glass of it and a quote under it saying "it's not totally shit" - or a similar TV ad

Good shout Slackers thanks!

Lagers, as soon as I hit the million mark with investors, I'll be able to afford Lee as my poster boy. Until then I've got a cheap fake in the form of Richie Crouch with a bic'd head. It's not the worst fake you've ever seen.

Further info for you Monolith - not sure if it will help - a marketing strategy based around me would be flattering but likely doomed - but you never know....

I have near opposite habits to Will but share some of his purchasing motives.  I always buy bottles for myself and rarely drink whiskey socially (pubs for me are about beer).  I like to think I am not influenced by packaging and advertising (mere fripperies!) but I am heavily influenced by critical reputation.

I often buy whiskies without having tasted them before, although for an expensive purchase I might first buy a sample from Master of Malt.  I am trying to build up my "education" by tasting a wide variety but as I hate to waste money or opportunity, I tend to target whiskies that have generated lots of good reviews and I have a bias to brands I perceive as having either a "heritage" - say, Glenfarclas for sherried, Ardbeg for Islay - or brands that, whilst perhaps young, I perceive them as having a commitment to quality.  A good example of the latter would be Compass Box for blends or Bruichladdich - the Port Charlotte range and the likes of the Laddie10 etc might be "edgy" but there seems to be a devotion to "craft presentation" that appeals to my values.

I very much favour OBs over independents at the moment - I want to have tasted the "baseline" from each distillery before I start looking at versions that might be unrepresentative.  The drinks I am least likely to buy are those that seem a bit staid or with nothing remarkable to recommend them  - I cannot get excited about, say, Jura and a lots of the miscellaneous Speyside GlenX's that always seem to be on offer at the supermarket.  That said, I like to think I am not a total snob about these matters - I think a lot of the mass-market distilleries have very good and reasonably priced products - which are effectively subsidized by the entry level "10s".  Big fan of the Glenlivet Nadurra (cask strength, "craft presentation"), Glenfiddich 15 (unusual solera method of production), Glennmorangie Nectar d'Or (usual finishing in wine casks).

I rarely buy a bottle for myself....I think I am very heavily influenced by brand image...  and tend to stick to the older, less "edgy" brands I'd tend to only buy a bottle of something that I've tried in a pub and liked.

I personally can't stand whisky, so in order not to skew results, I've not taken part.

Sometimes, occasionally, I'll have a Jameson's and Ginger ale.
I realise this is heresy.

That'll be why... Although you doing the survey would broaden the response coverage and be better for the survey than you not doing it surely? Slackers could probably say why.

Hmm, would love to help but am 41 so you're not interested. Why is the survey only open to 18-40?

Replied and said I was from London as there was no option for 'mericans.....

Do you have a strategy for raising capital?  Are you looking for small micro investment, or a few large venture/angel type investors?

Overall, I tend to try different types when out at pubs/bars/restuarants, and only buy stuff I've tried and know I like.

Moose - thank you very much for this information; such meditations are important contributors to my knowledge base and strategy. Master of Malt's sample service is brilliant and I have no doubt that it has led to many many full size bottle sales. I'm sadly not in such an established position as themselves but the introduction of this service was a great decision by the management.

I personally can't stand whisky, so in order not to skew results, I've not taken part.

That's not a problem at all Durbs and it's definitely not essential for you to enjoy the drink to take part in this survey.

It's not that I'm not interested Jamie but one could apply this logic continuously to the point whereby I'd be surveying 100 year olds plus. The survey serves to examine whether my business case hypothesis has any merit and in order for me to test the constituent elements of this proposition, I have had to impose some constraints from which I can work from. I have had a number of respondents aged 40+ and I am digesting their responses also.

Many thanks Sasquatch. This initial survey focusses exclusively on the UK market but I have been attending a number of UKTI export seminars in order to further my knowledge of the export process and gain a better understanding of the emerging world market demands. I have no doubt that I'll have a further survey in light of this trading opportunity further down the line.

I have a strategy for raising capital that has been in place since day one effectively. I don't intend to source capital from any outside investors in the short to medium term but I am conscious of gearing my business plan such that it would appeal to an investor in the future.

I'd just like to reiterate my thanks to everybody who has taken part in the survey to date. I plan to extend the deadline for the survey and I'd be hugely appreciative of any further entries. I'd also like to reiterate that it is NOT a prerequisite for you to like or to have ever drunk Scotch whisky.

He's already explained why that is more than once. Fill it in anyway, it's all data....

I just creep in under the wire. ;)

Interesting idea Mono, if you need any business plan/forecast type advice then give me a shout. It's not my forte but I may be able to assist.
