Gollums Cave, Avon Gorge - a warning
February 19, 2013, 12:34:51 pm
It's never been particularly pleasant.

Sat at gollums now. Not visited for a while, and won't again for a longer spell. There are 2 tents parked here, complete with axe, bow saw, etc. No occupants.

Fires against back of cave, rock soot covered. Weeping wet in patches. Graffiti proliferating. Plenty of rubbish.

To top it all off, the stench of human shit and piss is overwhelming. Worse than spew alley at closing time out our way.

Not a pleasant venue at all at present.

You have been warned!

well now it's taking shittiness to a whole new level of turdy depravity. God sake, overcoming the smell alone was about a 7C problem.

 :shit:

I daresay it could be brought back in to some kind of condition. With the generous use of bleach, napalm, and that priest fella off the exorcist.

Avon guidebook says Gollums is a second home to the st werburghs crew.

I've not been to undercover rock for a while. I can only assume they must have fire and smoke damaged the walls, littered the floor, and opened the sewers then!

well at least i can strike that from my list of climbing options in bristol. i used to go a lot to traverse there as was cheaper than the wall but often thought it would attract residents as its better than a bus stop by a mile. it was a truly awful venue in the first place...

Anyone know if its dry?

I've not been back since i posted dire report above.

If you are going, take some industrial soot removing tools, some bin bags, and some garden incense sticks for the smell (and holy water, garlic and a crucifix)

be aware may still have residents.

Please report back here if you go

Hey wintermute.

If you ain't already gone to gollums and still going.

If you've got a motor, give me a shout, I'll come up with ya, with brush, bin bags, etc. See if we can straighten place out a bit. As long as residents have moved on of course.

You can't polish a turd, but with a bit of elbow grease, we may be able to at least make it useable, take the fire soot off it, and drag it up from a sewer.
