Crusher Fingerboard Mount
January 17, 2013, 07:05:47 pm
So I'm in uni accomodation at the moment and would like a fingerboard up. Had a look at this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crusher-Holds-Screwless-Fingerboard-Mounting-Device-Climbing-Hold-Training/290836814130?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=019&category=75204&cmd=ViewItem

Thought it looked good but i worry that it might put a bit too much weight through the doorframe, dont really see how it spreads any load at all. Anyone got experience?

Cheers guys

Hey Ben. Not sure about that thing but I remember seeing this video and thinking that knocking up a frame like it might be a good idea when staying in rented accommodation. People have also made backing boards that hang over powerbars (I've got a pdf somewhere but I think I downloaded off of UKB). Video here:

Yer.. I just got a powerbar 2 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Powerbar-assembly-Folds-fully-welded/dp/B00376I6G4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358710154&sr=8-1

and will mount the BM on that.  Seems solid on the door frame.  Theory is most of the force is actually transmitted horizontally into the door frame due to the rotational force introduced by the set up (sorry - crap description).

I was thinking of building something similar, but - due to lack of faith in my own engineering skills - also propping it from below with a couple of uprights

I have the crusher mount on order (expected delivery tomorrow/wednesday) to I'll let you know what it's like if you're still after one.

I'll be interested to hear about this: buying a properly made one for thirty quid looks like a better bet than bodging one together with my rudimentary carpentry skills.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but I assume the main holding power comes from the camming action of the off-centre weight of the climber rather than from the clamping per se?

It might be worth considering if there is somewhere that it simply wont be seen.

When I had a board up in halls it was in a small storage room which had the hoover etc in. During inspections they would open the door, check that we weren't hiding banned stuff in there and move on. They would never take a step in, turn around and look up... and as the whole place was just painted breeze blocks the board went up on two expansion bolts, super easy!

Yer.. I just got a powerbar 2

I use the powerbar 2 with custom board mount made by a friend of mine:

I've used it for a more than a month and it worked very well so far.
