Ticino in May
April 15, 2012, 08:15:15 pm
Has anyone climbed in Ticino in early May? I'm thinking about going there for May bank holiday, but weather averages aren't to promising...

I was in Chironico last October and it was 34°... May can't be worse.
if you go for pushing your limits it could be better going to Magic Wood.

I was there in March and it was 26℃ already...
Still, nice and shady; probably worth a visit. Cresciano is quite high and breezy and cool in the mornings.

I guess I'll go to Ticino and if it's to warm there I'll move to Magic Wood.

Thanks!

Anyway temps have dropped recently and I think it's snowed again. It could be fine.

totally depends on weather - chironico is higher and cooler than Cresc, so always worth a look there if too warm down the valley.

Old Slackers may not know this, or else he would have already pointed it out no doubt, but Magic wood is actually not in Ticino, its in Graubunden, which, although adjacent is actually another canton.

having been an almost local...

magic wood is not in Ticino but might be perfect.

val calanca is in ticino, i wouldn't call it a world class area but it is in Ticino and has shady windy sectors that are quite good for this season, and a freshly published topo.
Good if you like small, peaceful areas off the beaten track, not good if you need to climb 15 problems in a specific grade range each day.

Possibly too early for alpine stuff like gotthardpass or susten  (snow...)

Just got back from 2 weeks there over the Easter break.

Temps were definatley the best higher up the valley at Chironico.
We made a visit to Cresciano but it was too warm to climb so we made do with a walk and to check out some blocs.

The weather on whole was pretty good managing about 9 days climbing in the total 13 we were there for.
The granite seemed to dry quickly after the rain too which was a relief and on the whole it was t-shirt weather for climbing but you probably wanted a hoody or jacket when you were spotting.
