UK bouldering trip
March 27, 2012, 02:23:47 pm
Due to our trip to font being postponed we're going to do 6 or 7 days in the UK instead, starting in 2-3 weeks.

Initially heading to Kyloe-in. We'll be looking for climbs from 6-7a+ ish

Will there be enough to keep us occupied there? If not maybe heading over to the lakes for a few days too, or is there any decent areas in northumberland worth checking out?

If you only do one problem make sure its A Northern Soul, 7A+ at Hepburn. You won't feel so disappointed about missing out on a trip to Font then.

I thought Hepburn was in font? One of those outlying crags, 800km north...

If only there was a guide book that covered all of the UK, that would be really useful.  :-\

But with even more confusing symbols...

If you're doing a UK trip then there are far better areas to explore than Kyloe In, as popular because it stays dry good as that is. I'm presuming you'd be after sampling the inspiring diversity of British bouldering away from your usual areas, rather than just a localised training trip. Consider...

Hepburn / Shaftoe Central / Queens Crag

Carrock Fell / St Bees / Langdale Boulders

Glen Nevis / Ruthven / Torridon

All that North Wales shizzle.

....just for starters.

Have to agree re Kyloe-in, especially if your grade range is 6-7a+. It's always filed under last resort when I'm in the County.

I'm surprised Rockfax haven't written one yet.  Or perhaps someone should just get up off their arse and spend a few years visiting crags and writing one.  It can't be that hard shirley?

Poo-pah. Basically if you like sharp limestone bouldering you'll like Kyloe-In. There are a couple of decent probs in that rangef or sure but there's better stuff at less sharp/gloomy spots with pleasant holds and views not far.

Thanks for all the replies, we'll not be at kyloe the whole time and would like to check out some other areas. St bees/Langdale were in mind and we'll look into the others.

I hate to say it, but it does sound like you need a copy of Boulder Britain http://boulderbritain.com/

Whilst we may be basking in Sunshine and the Grit is well and truly on the naughty step - in 2-3 weeks it may well be much cooler and grit-tastic...... Theres a nice route down from the County via Slipstones to Yorkshire and or Peak....

I'd have been very disappointed if that hadn't been said. I'd like my initial resistance to be noted at least  ;D

Niall, as an aside I was at Harmers Wood last night and a fella turned up with a copy of your book.  He'd been on a training course or something in Runcorn, was thinking of heading home via the Roaches but thought it a bit far.  But he said he had a look in your book and saw Harmers.  He was made up to visit somewhere decent, that he'd never come across before and it was your book that did that!  I thought it was cool anyway and a great example of your book doing exactly what it's supposed to do (although we all know that most of us simply use it to gawp at at home).
