Steel Project Build #456
December 06, 2011, 02:18:41 pm
Just ordered an on-one 456 steel hard tail to compliment my 6" heavy full bouncer.

So far I have frame, headset and seatpost!

Going to try and source mainly cheap parts, if you know of any fork/wheel/component bargains then hit me up!

Also, if you have any parts kicking around you want rid off, let me know.

Still haven't decided if I want to go singlespeed, or 1x9...

I made a single speed (DMR Trailstar) hardtail last year and love it. Used BMX components for the crankset, chain etc. & a singlespeed converter.  I just shopped around for some bargains in the waste bins and on t'internet and made it up as I went along. Good fun building it.

Bits I have around at the minute

Middleburn Uno - 175mm/32T - very light use
White Industries 22T Freewheel - very light use
Alfine 8 Speed 36H - 18T and 23T cog - very light use
JTek 8 Speed Shifter - very light use/perfect

The above were built into a Day One single speed then converted across to an alfine version before I splashed out on a Croix de Fer last month with SRAM Rival as it suited my needs better. When I say light use I mean 150 miles or so on forest access roads, put both parents in the ground this year so the bike never got touched. Open to offers.

I've got some pretty much brand new (only done 80 odd km) Fox Float 32s -- 140mm, non-tapered -- in white with the blue / silver decals. 2010s. PM me if interested and we'll talk wonga.

Reason for selling. Bought them to put in my Cruz Heckler but I'm running my carbon hardtail now with 100s in.

Bigd, is the middleburn 32t ring a 5 bolt?

I have a whole bike taking up space, Specialized rockhopper pro from earlier 00's - the lime green one. I'd be happy to break it up

It's the ring version, didn't have the tool so tapped on with hammer/screwdriver.

Would take £100 for the lot to get rid of it in one clean swoop, can send pics if needed.

Not sure I can make much use of any of that - cheers for the offer though!  :great:

 :dance1:

I just did similar with an On One Inbred frame and am unfeasibly happy with the result!

Went single speed, and sourced most of the expensive stuff from the singletrack forums, which seems to be a good hunting ground as long as you're prepared to do a bit of fettling. I managed to get hold of hope discs and hubs, good mavic rims and the like and still make a relatively cheap bike. If you do the singlespeed thing, go light!

Good luck

So far, it's looking like this:

On-One 456 18"
2010 RS Revelations with 110-150mm travel
Mavic 819 front wheel on DT swiss 340
Crank Bros Seatclamp
FSA Pig Pro Headset
FSA Platinum ISIS BB
FSA Seatpost
Lock-On Grips

Old Parts from the garage:
Race Face North Shore DH Cranks
Hope m4s/dh4s
Bars
Tioga Stem
Rim??
XT Mech

I can't decide if I should go a for a pure SS rear wheel (zero dish), or just go standard and put an adaptor on.

What I'll need:

Chainring
Bashring or chain device
Shifter (if not singlespeed)
Cassette as above
Saddle
Tyres
Pedals

Might have it running by chrimbo.....

I had that debate with myself, but with quality rim and spokes I decided it was highly unlikely that the wheel would break. Perhaps when I'm feeling flush I'll go out and buy a nice hope track-hub, but until then I'll just make do with the conversion kit on the cheaper (but still nice) 2nd hand stuff I got.

But perhaps you know of other advantages of a non-dished wheel other than strength and aesthetics...

So, tell us, tell us.

How is your project coming along? I feel a photo needs to be posted.
