what chalk bucket?
November 23, 2011, 12:42:56 pm
Hi, can anyone suggest a good quality chalk bucket please. Going to Scotland/Arran, for a month and will need to take plenty of chalk. Have only seen the LaSportiva bag so far, as my local shop doesn't stock any others. I like the look of the BaseCubic bucket, but only seen photographs on the net. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Sam's idea of a good chalk bag is the one whoever he is climbing with has brought with them......

Or the DMM one he designed (which I had, and accidentally lost, but was told by Sam he would pick it up, and even adjust the velcro to where he always meant it to be, but completely forgot)

I've never seen one that didn't do the job fine. I had an old DMM one for years which never let me down. The Moon ones are good, big, and reasonable cost, but I've got one of these cos they're funky.

Saw a lad down the wall the other night, with a B&Q, zip up, tool tote; as a chalk bag.
Big, fairly waterproof; plenty of room for brushes. They're stiffened round the zip, so stay open nicely.
Pockets round the outside.
He had his boots inside (in another placcy bag).
Seriously thinking about it myself.
Cheaper too...

From experience, I got a camo print bucket, looked cool I thought...until I had to find it on a dusky evening at the Cliff!

I would recommend whatever you get, get the brightest possible colour...much harder to lose in amongst a loaf of autumnal bracken at the crag!

I do still feel bad about that. You can have my DMM one if you like, though the velcro is still in the wrong place....

Brilliant replys - thanks.
I like the carrier bag best of all and the idea of using A.N.Others equipment.
Rigid loops/openings are a dumb idea, a mate landed on his and seriously hurt his back! As for fluffy toys turned into chalk bags, sounds like a school project to me, no doubt it's "cool" in some circles. I 'll prob' go for the Basecubic one, but will wait till they publish the Cotswold guide book, I live not too far from there and have heard on the grapevine that some quality problems have been found. Not holding my breath on that though!

Thanks again.

Ooh, I thought Drews OCD bags were no longer around, and just received a camo moon bag from my sister (she pinched it from TTT's bag when he wasn't looking at the cliff ;) )... I'd have got another otherwise.. (my last OCD one is starting to disintegrate after many years of hard use,,,)

Did the Bristol boulder comp today and saw several BaseCubic chalk buckets...they are of uber quality! Whopping great pockets with a clever system for keeping the chalk in the bag and not spilt all over the floor. Decision made. Don't be afraid to be different folks. It might feel a bit scary at first, but you'll soon get used to being an individual.
The Climbing Acadamy is such a good place to go bouldering, (indoors) if you live near Bristol, you got to check it out. They opened one in Glasgow too, might check it out on way to Arran.

I wanted something that I had not seen anyone else with, so got this in green.
http://climbxgear.com/chalkpod.aspx
But then again I may be a little biased as my climbing shoes are also by ClimbX as are my comp shirts.
Its a brand that hasn't really hit the UK, so I normally order direct.

As an owner of one of his chalk bags (which I bought with my own money) I reckon it is probably more that his chalk bags are pretty much perfect and people are happy to spread that message, especially if it is of benefit to a forum member and independent business.

I'd be more worried about the posts about climbx, by someone whose fb profile pic is the brand logo, a brand formed from a somewhat acrimonious split up of mad rock, who now accuse climbx of producing mad rock developed products without permission seehttp://www.dpmclimbing.com/articles/view/rumors-speculation-and-joe-garland and links within.

Or those about basecubic, which seems to be a more morally sound if new company who are apparently nearing completion of a guidebook and also a couple of chalk bags whose existence I was unaware of, but with a surprising amount of vocal support from new members.
