Good pub/grub in York
November 11, 2011, 12:53:24 pm
Howdy Y'all,
I'm in York for a course from work next Mon/Tues... can anybody recommend a decent pub? Somewhere with good food and real ale. Just a standard pub type meal - steak pie, homemade burger, that type of thing. A really good bread and butter pudding would be a bonus.
Ta, Joe

Stonegate Yard is probably one of the better options for food, I've never had pudding there so don't know what they have on the menu - the beer choice varies, but they've usually got something decent on. If you want the food and real ale combo, somewhere like Brigantes on Micklegate - definitely one of the best places for beer and the food is pretty good.

Hi Joe,

As an ex-resident, I can confirm that York's a bit hit and miss with food, some really nice places mixed in with some really poor tourist traps.

To be honest I'd be struggling to recommend a pub grub type establishment in town, however if you're prepared to travel 10 mins down the A64 towards Leeds, Ye Olde Sun Inn in Colton is fantastic.

City centre-wise, my recommendations would be:

Evil Eye, Stonegate - trendy cocktail bar place that does really good, super-authentic Thai food
El Piano, behind Stonegate - Vegan restaurant, top notch
Oscar's, Stonegate Yard - no-nonsense, good value stodge - huge burgers, steaks etc

Will ask a mate and post back if he recommends owt else.

I'd recommend Stonegate Yard as well, was very nice when I ate there.

Mason's Arms near the foss bridge slightly out of town toward fishergate is some of the best pub grub in york. Warning though you need to be very hungery as the portions are rediculously big!

How could I forget the Mason's?!

+1 from me - it's probably a 10 - 15 min walk from the Minster as well, plenty of time to burn off a few calories after a humungous lasagne!

Thanks Y'all, I'm sorting out my own accomodation, so I can stay at the Mason's too. Could be dangerous though  :alky:
