Phoenix from the Ashes
November 10, 2011, 11:03:37 am
As I predicted, only three years and ten months ago, with a few quid and the right management The Broadfield could become a decent pub again ....... Strolled past this morning and there's a banner slung up outside advertising the joys to come ........ Twenty draught beers , one hundred single malts and  a range of artisan pies and sausages ........  :icon_beerchug:

I hope its true. I still have a drink in there most weeks as i wait for my curry to be made over the road.

Its a shite hole at the minute but its on my way from work to the flat and usually i cant be bothered to walk to the sheaf.

Hmm, sounds like the 'improvements' they made to the Lescar, the main one being jacking the prices up to get rid of the old clientele.

Very probably true ......... Better that than being turned into flats though ...... And there were times when it was less of a pub and more of a drop in centre ......

The clientele of the drop in centre that it was in the early 90s still prop up the bar now.

I would like to say that it was always a shite pub, serving shite beer, with no signs of anything remotely artisan to eat.

It was just the fact that loads of us used to hang out there that makes it one of those rose tinted specs kind of venues.

For years (about '99 - '04) it was also the best pre / after party venue possible. The only place that would put up with us on a Sunday afternoon for sure.........

Be nice to see it tarted up and serving decent stuff now that I've retired from such activities though.

Looking forward to it opening. The new landlord was making enquiries to Matt Heason about ways of attracting climbers back - talking about climbing art/photos and hosting talks/slideshows etc.

I don't mind paying reasonable prices if the food and beer is good. I'm fed up with the poorly kept beer at the Sheaf - how to ruin Farmers Blonde and Easyrider in one easy step. Be nice to go out, have 2 pints and not get a hangover!

That's a really good idea. Could be the ideal place for that sort of thing.

Nah

You want beer, tabs, pool, drunk climbing legends/tramps and people being slapped in the chops by a girl.

Thats what we all loved the place for.

Yes I think it is but to be fair they own half a dozen or so places and they aren't all forum  clones. They own the York in Broomhill which is the place that so impressed us with their food and service last Sunday.

Not forgetting Joe in situ on the snooker table.

The Broadie was always the best place to watch big footie games ie Euro and World Cup. Eng v Arg both games were memorable

Eng v Arg both games were memorable

1998 World Cup - Andy Parkin shouting "viva Argentina!" during the game (the only supporter there) followed by Smeg leaping onto the (covered) snooker table when Argentina won to shout and point at all the people who had lost bets with him.

2002 World Cup was better due to the pubs serving from 7am...

The day of the England Nigeria game I spent from 7am til kickout time in the Broadfield.  :guilty:

Drove past at the weekend and the facelift is looking good.  :2thumbsup:

Went last night with a few of us after the works. Really good and luckily ,other than the bogs , nothing like the old broadfield.

Good food at decent prices (6.50 for pie or sausage menu items, pies were good.), good range of beer both on tap and bottled, loads of whiskeys, table service and i didnt get punched by anyone so thats a positive.

I will be sat eating pie and drinking chimay most monday and tuesday evenings from the new year.

The only negatives I've encountered so far is the unlit beer garden with a two foot deep trench all the way around it and the waiting time to get served ........ Otherwise pretty damned good ........
