Ligament recovery and pain (foot)
October 20, 2011, 10:06:49 am
Following a game of football and a late tackle, I have apparently bruised my ligament connected to my 1st metatersal (what connects big toe to foot).  A couple of weeks later and it still hurts from time to time.

Am I good to climb on it?  Doing anything toe on that isn't steep, is impossible due to pain, but I can inside/outside edge without much discomfort.

Would using a rigid boot (i.e winter boot) be helpful?

Any tips to speed up recovery would be ace, am currently eating lots of ibuprofen and occasionally icing it.

Cheers

First suggestion is if you're still having to take ibuprofen, and from the history in the rest of your post, don't try to climb  :badidea: .  Talk to your physio, try getting them to refer you to a foot specialist. There are some specific stretches for your foot/ankle which may help, again under specialist advice. The nice thing about these stretches is you do them sat down.

I got quite a few of these type of injuries whilst ballet training. They took about six weeks to recover enough to do class or climb; with regular physio and at least the first week with a walking stick or on crutches. I found alternating cold and warm water foot baths helped. For the first month usually the only exercise I did was upper body yoga and swimming(I loathe swimming )

Be careful with foot injuries the foot is a very complex and easily damaged appendage. I know we usually have two feet but we need them both to work, every day and pain free (mine are a bit of a mess but mostly pain free these days).

Good luck Chips

I'm not really "having" to take ibuprofen, more just taking it cos the hospital said to do it when I first visited them (2 weeks ago).  Should I stop?  The pain is pretty mild and only occasional.  I could certainly climb on it, and just stop if it's sore?

Rigid boot yay/nay?  Mad keen to train right now.

Thanks

Nobody else can tell you if you should climb on your damaged foot. You have to decide for yourself!

Having said that, you could stop taking ibuprofen if the pain is not significant. Do keep icing after activity. If you want to try climbing on it then perhaps you could but pay attention to not impeding the recovery by overdoing it. If it hurts, best to stop. If it doesn't hurt, take it easy.

Think about how to train without using your foot so much for a couple of weeks?
