Music for climbing films recommendations
August 17, 2011, 10:36:53 am
I'm working on a few small films for the net at the moment and am struggling for inspiration with regard to the music i'm going to use.  Anyone got any suggestions? I'm open minded, it doesn't matter what it is if it sounds good.  Ideally if i can listen to it on youtube and get it off Itunes that'll be ideal. Thanks in advance

Route, bouldering, sport?

Names of routes/problems?

I particualrly like it when the music has some sort of link/reference to the climb, e.g. in Stick It! when Mark Katx is on Mr Fantastic the tune is Doyen D "The Money Shot" which has the line "Hanging from the wall is a fantastic feat" which fits perfectly for the problem being climbed.

If thats not giving too much away that is.

Its all sport climbing in North Wales.  One is a Big Bang short and the other is a film about the new routes/projects. I like it when the music has relevance too but this normally always ends up with a silly song in my vids and i want a more serious vibe

I like having a diverse mixture of music normally. Slow stuff, techno, rap shit, whatever!

Something not too obtrusive I would have thought.. you want the film to be about climbing not a music vid with some climbing etc.. I tihnk its really hard to choose.. and theres no genre that fits all...

Apart from Steps of course.

Do it Doylo, DO IT!

It will be if you lose control and you got no soul.

Someone asked the same question a while back. Was it the Outcrop Films bloke? There were some good suggestions then, which I doubt you will get in this thread.

Back on topic...

Ode To Joy from Ludwig Van's 9th

actually, a lot of the soundtrack from Clockwork Orange could work

Ivor Cutler's works would be unlikely to work well

What about the music from some of the old cowboy/westerns?

The intro to Big Country for instance

Have a random trawl through Jamendo and maybe find something from someone who actually wants you to use their stuff for films and that?

That way, when S4C want to broadcast your stuff, there wil be fewer problems...

Always thought if I made a climbing film I would want to include this it’s an instrumental called Phenomenon by Hacride, not a lot happens but it is broodingly epic. (If you like a bit of rock music)

In terms of general mood I prefer fairly ambient, instrumental soundtracks, although there are exceptions e.g. Mr Fantstic in Stick It.

One of my all time favourites in terms of mood matching landscape is the sound track duing a Buttermilks sequence on West Coast Gimps - a dreamlike, chiming tune whilst Jedi Mindtricks is climbed.

Along a similar line, I think a bit of Morricone might match a concerted graceful climbing sequence - building slowly over the wordless, intense culmination of a redpoint to enhance the "in the zone" focus.

Maybe the eerie Harmonica theme from Once Upon a Time in the West:

or the music box riff from the final duel of For a Few Dollars More:

did you see the Concrete Circus vids? They might give some inspiration... Moby (I know) has a lot of stuff on Moby Gratis for use by film makers etc.

I always thought the intro for West Coast Gimps was cracking though. '...PSYCH!'

Yeah I quite like the type of music that was used on the trials biking video on concrete circus on climbing vids.

I've used the Cinematic Orchestra on a few vids, you sometimes have to trawl through to get good stuff, but it's generally worth it.
Other than that, royksopp is good,  sigur ros is good but a bit cheesy as BBC have overused them
Some of the more commercial Wap records stuff could be good.

Maybe a bit obvious but try the Thievery Corporation. Will find something for you on youtube when I'm at home.

If you go for something of a particular genre then somebody won't like it - see any UKC thread about videos. To have the widest appeal (or more accurately cause the least offence) you should choose something pretty generic, try library music like http://www.audionetwork.com/ (click 'student/home production' for prices).
If you're going to download something commercial I'd recommend Amazon over iTunes because it's DRM free so there are no editing issues, and the bitrate is higher.
