In reply to post 335: Chris, What crag(s) would you recommend for a one or two day visit to Dartmoor, given that I've never been. Not necessarily the Plantation equivalent, but somewhere not too obscure and with a good spread of grades? Cheers, Mike.

In reply to post 345: Mike, I would recommend Bonehill Area for a day. Its the closest you will get to Plantation on the Moor. I assume you have had a look at www.javu.co.uk. All you will ever need to know is there. Might be hard to do two days if your fingers arent up to it - much more abrasive than grit. If you have two days head out to Northcott one day, then the Moor the next.

In reply to post 348: I thought you'd say Bonehill - must have a trip down. Is Northcott the one by the sea? Sam's been, said it was nice.

In reply to post 359: yeah, Northcott is by the sea. Unfortnately its either Granite or tidal. Sandymouth just North is good too. If you havent got the North Devon and Corwall Guide, get OTES 109 and 120. Si Young reckons you can climb at Nortcott at high tide on neaps, but I cant swear by it. We got cut off by tide at Sandymouth last time we were there. Bonehill is a good starting point, and there are a few other good spots in that area, Hound Tor, Saddle Tor, etc, all about 10 mins apart. Stu Littlefair has done a lot in the area too.

In reply to post 368: Sounds nice - a friend of a friend knows Simon, so could look him up. By the sounds of things, Stu has done EVERYTHING in the area!

  In reply to post 370:
mike - it`s stu L here.

I don`t know what sort of grade you climb at, but if you are capable of
doing a few V8`s in a day, and have someone to climb with/ many mats.
Definately check out Upton Roofs. There are seven or eight problems there,
but they are as good as anything I`ve done. Details in new OTE, photos in
Devon Gallery of www.darkpeakimages.co.uk

  In reply to post 517:

Thanks Stu, but if I manage a few V8`s this season then I`ll be well
chuffed! Few V5`s in a day at the moment and I`d be doing well.

Is everything hard at Upton then? Great site btw.

  In reply to post 518:
Following earlier discussions about Dartmoor, I had a fantastic session at
Smallacombe rocks on Saturday. Its not a huge venue; only 30 or so
problems (but given the abrasive nature of the rock you cant do much
more) , all of fantastic quality. Very little cleaning required, with one
or two obvious exceptions, nice height, and good landings, with a mat or
two. All this with great views.

more like 130 problems at Smallacombe...much better and more varied than the boring Bonehill....try King's Tor as well for some top quality problems...

I think the javu online guides are as up to date as you're going to get. Not heard of a paper guide in the pipeline but I could be talking out me arse.
