Even without them I would still say you were anal. :)

RAID is another option for desktop systems (although I've gone OTT with RAID in the desktop and the NAS :geek:).

'bum pucker' 'anal' 'drive' there's alot of homoerotic references in this thread.. Never mind 'backup'... ;)

After buying a new case and booting from laptop bios etc etc, there's been no joy. Tomorrow I'm going for a diagnostic at 2pm in Stockport. It's either 199 then or 399 depending on whether he can recover anything. Worst week of my life.

Good luck. It sounds pretty devastating, sounds like it is worth the money though.

I lost 1000 words of my thesis in the last few days when I was at uni (damn, that makes me sound/feel old) and I was so uncontrollably angry with myself I couldn't write a single word for 2 days.

And that doesn't even come close to yours - I really hope you get it sorted!

My brother got his entire Media Studies film deleted from the hard drive in the editing suite a week before it was meant to be submitted by some inept technician. A shitstorm ensued. (teach him for doing a shit course :))

I have two thesis submittal tales....

First was as an ugrad, my mate Rich stopped off at a well known record shop in Manchester on his way back to University after easter - with his (typed!) dissertation in the boot. Somone broke into the car and stole his bag - along with dissertation. He was a lucky boy, as they thieves chucked away all the boring shit (including his dissertation) into someones front garden, and they were kind enough to call the police and re-unite the dissertation with its owner.

Second as a pgrad, a student I shared an office with (who commuted from Manchester to Leeds) had all four copies of this thesis printed out (300 pages per copy) with all the colour pages etc.. and was bringing them to the official binder in Leeds... Whilst crossing from Manc vic to Picadilly the bottom fell out of the plastic bag he has carrying the copies in (silly boy) and all 1200 bits of paper went swirling away in the wind... landing in the wet and dirty pavement.. he recounted the tale very well, about how a female passer by saw the obvious distress and ran around picking up the pages for him - but he just stood there with his arms outstretched in a 'why me?' pose, knowing all was ruined. Of course he had to get them all printed out again rather than losing the work - but after 4 years of phd, the printing & submitting phase is quite symbolic..

There are two types of people...

Those who backup and those who have never had a hard-drive fail on them.

I fit both of those.  Am I bipolar?  I hear it's cool to be nowadays.

Half of me likes anal, half doesn't and the rest is undecided.

They're not mutually exclusive....

That statement suggests that they are mutually exclusive.
