Forum updates

As you will have noticed, the board has just undergone some changes.

I have just made a *major* upgrade to the board to bring it up to the latest version. Why?

- loads of security updates
- better/faster/etc
- I can now install other modifications to make the board much better

- There may be teething problems - please PM me if you find anything that doesn't work properly.

- All of the custom styles have gone, but I will be uploading styles today. I'll post as and when they are uploaded.

Unfortunately, I've accidentally overwritten the avatars gallery, so anyone who had a ukb hosted avatar has lost it. Sorry folks, it couldn't go 100% smoothly could it?!

If you want to see a list of changes as to why this was worthwhile, go to:

http://www.phpbb.com/support/documents.php?mode=changelog

and look at all the changes since 2.0.5 and 2.0.4 - that's a lot of changes!

I've added four styles (ukb and subSilver are the same btw):

- Charcoal2
- digitech
- Jenova
- orange101

The images at the top of all the styles need to be customised to ukb, and when I've got about 10 styles up, I'll post a vote for which one you think should be the forum default (I *hate* the ukb/subsilver one).

I'll go for jenova, cos it looks f-ff-f--fff-f-fresh and sounds a bit like a kind of pr0n-star name.

Yeah I know - going to get them all online first, then I'll have to sort the images out when I get home....

Before, when you hovered over a thread title it gave you some sample text from the last post, but that seems to have gone?

No big deal, just wondered.

Yes, that'll have to be re-implemented. It would have been nice to have kept the existing mods, but the main board was getting really out of date, and had several well publicised security holes, so the priority had to be updating that.

I'll re-introduce that mod, and some more as soon as I can.

Any chance of getting rid of that picture of the guy spewing?   :D

Also is there a way of turning avatars off for my profile, or should I just d/l opera and turn pictures off?

The spewing man should have gone already - if you've still got it then your browser must be caching it.

There's no way of turning off avatars in your profile. I used to have a "work friendly" style which suppressed them, but that's a crap solution.

There will almost certainly be a mod to suppress avatars though so I will have a look around - I realise that avatars can make worktime viewing tricky, and that some people just hate them.

There are now 15 styles that are selectable via your profile - should cover mosts tastes.

Ok, I've found a mod that lets you turn on/off avatars and signatures in your profile.

Will implement as soon as I can.

A lot of people won't have been able to get on because their selected style was one that has now been deleted.

For those users I've reset your style to the default and now you can select one of the new styles instead.

Sorry 'bout dat

I liked the spewing man - kind of set the tone nicely, reminded me that but for the grace of my current moderate drinking habit there go I.

I've "rebranded" all of the different styles now, so pick your favourite.

I like the FI Apple, Crisp, and Helius best.

Which links can't you see?

It is a bit of a pain at the moment, but I'll have a look and see how tricky it is.

I'm trying to install various mods at the moment:

- Supress avatar/signatures (selectable in your profile)
- Printer friendly topic view
- Attachment mod: this is more of use for ukcaving.com at the moment, but it will serve a purpose here as well, as I think it lets users have a photo gallery and things
- Mouse over topic preview
- Left/right aligned image bbcode tags with text flow
- Merge topics (for moderators)
- RSS syndication

Which is a fair bit of work, and of course then there's the new design of the rest of the site, which is progressing.....slowly

Every now and again when I do something it goes to a blank page. No major problem, just thought I'd let you know.
Also the gallery would be a good idea for us without web space for posting images (although I'm getting 50megs soon)

Ok, I'll see if I can sort Charcoal2 I want a better font than the squiggly ukbouldering "logo" for that style as well.

Just been trying out FI Plain which is ok apart from that fact that it makes your scrollbars invisible which is a strange bit of design work - I'll fix that one too because that's a nice style otherwise.
