*full* PS3, help!
January 12, 2011, 09:33:57 pm
OK,

the old 40Gb ps3 is full... well the save files bit is.I find it hard to believe that the whole 40Gb is used... but there is nothing else on it but save files.

Could I have done this? Is this why there are so much bigger hard drive ps3s?.... my sons have laid it down that there are no more save files they can delete without their gaming lives being rent asunder...

slackline / norton..... any ideas??

ta...

Yes it can easily happen, go into the games section under saves and look at the size of all the files (even deleted old ones that you don't want/play/own to free up some space).

Solution...

Posted way back when I was doing it and wrote up the PS3 Gentoo install : Upgrade your HD.

You *might* be able to take the 40Gb out stick it in a USB housing and put the 500Gb back in and then copy your games installs/saves back to the 500Gb without first having to back them up, but I didn't bother trying (I didn't have much on it anyway as I'd only just bought it).

This was for the original "fat" PS3, no idea about slims, but I'd imagine its as easy.

Shout if you've any questions.

Surely there must be games that you're never going to play again so don't need the save files for?

Of course, its just a bit of a pain to have one of the two USB ports permanently taken up with an external USB drive attached (although you could probably use a hub on one port to provide more USB slots, but it then looks a bit messy).

If you use an external USB drive and back everything up first then you can't go wrong.

As I & Bubba mention though, try getting rid of saves for games you're not going to play again & see how much space it frees.

If you can add an external hard drive to the PS3 you can back up all the game saves to that.

Then change the hard drive in the PS3 for a new one with lots of storage.

When you start up the PS3 with the new hard drive the PS3 should set it up for use with your PS3.

Finally you can restore your your game saves from the back up USB drive from within the PS3 menu somewhere.

Can't really help any further than that suggested below.  Likewise can't believe that there aren't some of the save files that aren't required?  Most save files are relatively small, apart from GT5 which seems to gobble up hdd space.  But then I doubt that fits in to your gaming schedule anyway?

Not tried the external hdd backup option but might give it a go this weekend.

You sure you've not got a load of videos on there at 5GB a piece?

OK..

my boys & me will have a tearful moment & see what is filling the space.. though TBH we have been managing the * your memory is nearly full* warnings for months.

I havnt put any video on it, so not looked... however this has raised the possibility that my kinder have been doing so.

I will investigate.

thanks for the help  :)

IMO regardless you should swap the HD over....

* HD's are cheap.
* No harm having more space, means you don't have to worry.
* You can purposefully rip movies (Handbrake is brilliant and a piece of piss to use), it saves having stacks of DVDs lying around.
* Its really easy to do.

You just need to be brutal. I had the same problem on my old 360 but I realised there were quite a few games I'd either sold, traded or when it came to it I would never actually play again as they'd been superceded by newer versions/better games.
