The first dedicated bouldering facility in Wales will open its doors to the public on Saturday, November 6.
The Climbing Station is opening in a 9,000 sq ft dedicated facility at Rizla House on Treforest Industrial Estate in Pontypridd.

Bouldering at the Climbing Station will take place on purpose-built climbing walls that are suitable for all abilities regardless of age, weight, and height or fitness level. The floor will be covered in safety matting and the brightly coloured walls will allow individuals or families to enjoy a whole new adventure experience together.

As a result, the indoor facilities at The Climbing Station will be perfect for anyone planning a first taste of climbing, or others who want to improve or perfect their skills.

The facility is the brainchild of Matthew Perrott, 27, from Pontypridd, who has 10 years’ indoor and outdoor climbing experience and extensive management knowledge of the climbing centre industry.

Matthew brings unique skills to the company with expertise in many areas, including climbing wall design and construction, and nationally-recognised climbing and outdoor activity qualifications. He is also a member of the British Mountaineering Council.

The new business will create five permanent jobs in its first year with additional jobs being created in its second and third year.

Matthew explained that the sport is becoming more and more popular in the UK.

“The number of people taking up climbing in the UK has been steadily increasing for years with more and more people taking up this fun, adventurous sport,” he said.

“With the growth of a new form of climbing, bouldering-only venues are becoming more and more popular, with many opening in England and Scotland over the past few years. Climbing Station will be the first of its kind for the people of Wales."

“The Climbing Station will offer facilities that will match any others in the UK and give individuals, families, corporate groups and local authorities the chance to see for themselves how bouldering can improve fitness, build teamwork, and give both adults and children a chance to try their hand at a new pastime in a safe and welcoming environment."

“And bouldering has an additional advantage because it does not require expensive equipment or a partner to enjoy the sport.”

Had a look round this the other day and it's awesome fucking wells. Only saw the boards with no holds or matting. Mat's vision and Andy Long's team have installed what should be one of the best bouldering facilities in the UK. I can't wait, it's going to be well plastic!

Was down that way this weekend and enjoyed a good session at Boulders yesterday - a nice circuit of comp problems on non tweaky holds. The only downside was when they decided to put the heaters on which happen to be directly above the bouldering walls... It became a bit like climbing in a greenhouse with its a strictly tops stay on policy!

With the new wall, Cardiff will be well served in terms of bouldering on offer when Dinas is gopping!

I'm well up for another Lakes sesh.  Just have to wait a little for the back and arms to sort themselves out.  Think I may need to take out a loan to fund the fuel costs though!
