Plans for the development of a water bottling plant at Cowdale (aka Staden) Quarry have been rejected by High Peak Borough Council.
The application, tabled by Express Park Buxton, was considered by the Development Control Committee on Monday 11 October, and the senior planning officer’s recommendation was that planning permission be refused based on a number of grounds, informed by national guidelines for industrial development.

In brief it was felt that the proposals would;

harm the visual amenity and character of the countryside and special landscape area;
introduce industrial development into the countryside clearly visible from the Peak District National Park;
result in the loss of trees and ancient woodland contained within the designated Ashwood Dale local wildlife site; and that
insufficient information had been provided which considered the potential noise generation from the plant; the proposals could have a harmful affect on local residents.
In making the submission, the planning officer pointed out that national guidelines recommend that “industrial development should take place in urban areas and not in designated countryside areas “ and that the officers were not satisfied that alternative sites could not be found in a more urban setting (e.g. an industrial estate).

It is now likely that the developers will appeal against this decision.

This is good news, I think the idea of a massive water bottling plant in the quarry is a bad idea, the effect on the local village would be severe.

'If you would like to support or object to a planning proposal, you can write to us at

Peak District National Park Authority
Aldern House
Baslow Road
Bakewell
Derbyshire DE45 1AE

quoting the planning application reference and file number if possible

or you can email planning.service@peakdistrict.gov.uk .

This is the quickest and best way of getting your comments considered by the planning officer'.

I cant seem to find the actual application on the peak planning site but do know that

"Plans for a water bottling plant and heritage centre are to be determined by High Peak Borough Council.

Tabled by Express Park Buxton, the proposal for Cowdale Quarry will be considered by the Development Control Committee on Monday week (October 11)."

Sadly it's often the way that these things are a death by 100 cuts, eg the first application is refused on x grounds, the developer then changes their plans to remove this barrier and appeals, then get's knowcked back on remaining issue(s) and deals with these and then suddenly there's no good grounds to reject the application.

See Tesco for this plan in action.

The pDNPJPA are in my opinion a bunch of off roading supporting tardo.

Ah well, its a start to have it rejected at the start, I bothered to write (via their online form, the link for which I can no longer find) and object saying it would ruin climbing, walking and the village.

Unfortunately this is not necessarily good news for climbing access - which is currently a concession from the landowner.
