Winter freshman
October 09, 2010, 12:24:47 pm
Hey,

I'm new to ukb and am having a lot of fun bunking of work to read up on the latest guff about bouldering.

I've been climbing about 18 months but was unable to climb last winter so have never experienced winter bouldering. All my bouldering mates say i'm in for a treat! So, i was hoping to get some advice about some problems i should try in the coming months. I climbed my first 7a about 6 weeks ago (Mark's roof left hand at gardoms) and another last week at burbage west (Breakfast arete) but think around 6c would be good for me. My favourite problems are more balancy ones like Swivel fingers.

So, my main question is, what classic 6c (ish) problems should i try to climb?

Thanks

Rob  :)

get the peak bouldering guide and go to any of the major crags and get ticking. you won't be disapointed.
try and also get to earl, caley and almscliff as well.
trackside at curbar should be next on your list

Why aim low?  You should be looking at all problems of 7b and below!

I was actually at trackside on thursday. Getting over my heel but didn't quite have the energy to pop for the top. Heel kept popping off which led to much bruising. Hopefully next time. I tend to climb with people who know the areas so guide is often left at home. Maybe i should browse it myself.
Actually just wanted to know what people thought were classics that i might have overlooked?

Sounds like you are going pretty well. Where abouts are you based, and where do you want to know about classics?

Oh yeah, didn't give that info.
Based in Manchester, so i mostly go out to the peak. Burbage valley, curbar, etc. Also, i have been up to Yorkshire (Almscliff and Bridestones) because its not actually too far away. Particularly like pebble wall at Almscliff, i thought it was really classy climbing.

Cheers.

In Winter, get yourself to Thorn.

re trackside;
if your heel is coming off then its either in the wrong place or your foot is incorrectly orientated  its not a pop to the top, you sit on your heel and reach. now go and get it done

Cheers Jim. Had a sneaky suspicion that might be the case. My heel is turned out for sure, but i'm not rocking over enough me thinks. Shall hopefully crush now!

Thorn crag looks great. Loads of classy problems by the look of it ("and for my next trick" particularly). Already downloaded the free guide. Will be back with news soon!

Get up to Earl Crag too. Class just oozes from the place. Along with green gloop in some place
