Mobile Internet anyone
August 20, 2010, 02:26:46 pm
Due to one big house related disaster I need to purchase a dongle to access the net at a new temporary address. It isn't worth setting up the phone line as we will only be in the place for a couple of months topside

Any recommendations?

Looking to nip out a bit later this afternoon to sort it out.

My 2p on 02:

I have mobile broadband with O2 and they are shiter than shite. The mobile towers keep dying and you can't get through to anyone. Was in a queue for 1 hour last week before it got to 8pm and the fuckers went home. I didn't speak to anyone.. I get more info from punters on their forums than employees of O2!

Don't know if their landline broadband service/customer service is any better or you've had to speak to anybody about it to find out so to speak?

We use Vodafone at work and they seem much better, not sure of pricing though?

3 have always seemed the cheapest when I've looked...

Cheers - might give them a try.

I've looked at a good number of reviews and they all seem contradictory - presume it depends on location?

T-Mobile and 3 are other options but not sure that the coverage is all that good.

Really location based. Contrary to Tris - where I live and work O2 is 5 bars, vodafone crap,. Speed of connection seems quite related to strength of signal, and getting a 3g connection to work can be quite fenicky when there are only 1-2 bars. I'd go for PAYG whatever you do - and I believe that 3 do a cheap deal - but Orange may well be the cheapest with a £5 a month offering - but its only 500mb.. (I may be wrong about this!)

I found this page useful when comparing the suppliers:

http://www.broadband-expert.co.uk/mobile-broadband/

Check 3g coverage if you live anywhere near countryside/non-city centre, all the mobile providers have coverage maps on their websites. However if you are on the edge of a coverage area beware. I live about 500-1000m inside 02's 3g/HSDPA coverage (fast 3g). I don't get this all the time (about 10%), when I rang up to complain (as per above) - you get the usual, 'oh the map isn't that accurate' excuses excuses etc etc

Whereas Vodafone always has 3g signal in my house (work Blackberry/mobile dongle is Vodafone).

Cheers all - just got online with 3 and all seems to work fine. I'll stick with this for a couple of months until building work is completed...

Speed seems OK, although our youngest may have to curb his Youtube habit for a while.
