Weight Belts
August 03, 2010, 08:13:56 pm
Had a quick  :google: but didn't find much of use.

Anyone on here got any recommendations for a good weight belt for training?  I'm going to use it for getting my knee sorted and also for fingerboard/pull-up training (when things get too easy, but the next step is too hard).

I'm thinking something with adjustable weight, probably from 5 to 15 kg ish.

Any thoughts?

A divers belt works well for me, can add and remove the weights with ease.

If its for deadhangs and pullups you could buy a set of dumbbells and attach them to your harness or a belt using a sling and karabiner. I use this and it means you can quickly go from 5-100lbs or whatever (depending how many dumbells you have). Just feed the sling(s) throught the hole in the dumbell(s) and back through your belt/harness.

Also I sometime use a makeshift weightbelt of 2* 5lb padded ankle weights joined together by feeding the velcro straps through each other. Depending on how big your belly is you could fit 3 on adding 15 lbs :) and costing less than a tenner if you shop around.

Out of sheer curiosity, why not just put them round your ankles?  Would it not give your core a better work out if wearing weights whilst bouldering or doing leg raises whilst dead-hanging?

Fair question. Haven't tried them for leg raises but yes I suppose this would be useful.

Although I haven't tried climbing with ankle weights I'd guess that the additional weight around your ankles(or any where on your limbs) would balls up your technique more so than having weight around your midsection. I'd assume this would not be productive for training (other than building strong thighs) but good question has anyone tried this?

yes its like yoga very good for core. actually it is but i'd struggle to move my pins with 25 kg around each ankle to deadhang.

Cool, might get one of those divers belts. I've got 3kgs worth of ankle weights but will probably need to go higher as my leg gets stronger so I shouldn't need too many to make it pretty hard.

Cheers guys.  :great:

I have a diver's belt, I use lumps of lead as weights which were kindly given to me by a short bearded man.

Just realised I've got 25kg of lead sitting in the cupboard  :dance1

What's the best way of cutting lead sheet?

It's very soft, so if it's 3mm sheets you could cut it (very carefully) with a Stanley knife.

 :agree:

Put the lead on a hard surface and use a bit of timber as a straightedge to allow you to make several passes with the knife until your through.

Not sure hwo think it is - I'll have a look when i get home. It was literally off the back of a lorry, so I'm not really sure. My flatmate saw it falling off a lorry as he was walking home so grabbed it!

It's been in my cupboard for 5 years waiting for a use!

You could have built some sort of  suit and become a vigilante crime fighter. Of course you'd need a catchy name like 'lead man' or something.
