Snapped Tendon
July 14, 2010, 08:14:06 pm
I was climbing earlier when my foot slipped and I effectively landed on only my LH ring finger. Audible pop, followed by lots of dull pain. ~ 1 hour later it's very painful if I put / pull any weight on it what so ever. Pain appearss to be centered in the middle 1/2 of my forearm and base of ring finger (A2 ?). Consistent dull pain when it's just laying.

Do I need to attend A and E?
Can anyone recommend a hand injury sports doctor ? (you know what I mean) in the London area.

Thanks, Will.
 :(

I suspect A+E will be clueless.  If you're going to see someone get someone with an interest in hands.  I'd expect it'll be an A2 injury.

I'll be the first to link you to this as Slack---line usually beats me to it.

Did it sound like this?

Be better linking to the day, so you can read the subsequent events.  And return to, errr, glory.

I'll place money on your GP scratching their head and mumbling "RICE".

A specialist hand physio would be your best bet initially, I doubt an orthopod/ plastics guy woul dknow any more (assuming it doesn't need repair etc.)

Thought so. Who was the guy with arms bigger than my legs?

I was the bald one with glasses, climbing the Black V4 on the end (badly).

Will do. I don't get over to WV much tho' - if it's dry I'll be at Brownstones working my way through the problems there.  :)

Cool, I think I'll be going there a bit more now the finger has settled.  And I need to update the topo.

Speaking of the Brownstones topo, I think I have a new variation for a sit start on the muddy wall/arrete.

IMHO, if you do something you feel is pretty serious, like rupture a tendon, A&E is the place to go, if you have a big (teaching) hospital nearby. They'll have a plastic surgery dept (who deal with serious hand injuries), and will have an SHO who'll be able to look at it and decide whether anything needs to be done.

Obviously relatively minor (in the greater scheme of things) pulley sprains will be given short shrift, but if it's serious, you should get a consultant appointment at the least. A&E is often the fastest way into the system.

Plastic Surgery is generally a centralised service, so one hospital (usually) covers a large area so check before you assume a Teaching Hospital would have one.  The usual system via A+E is to be seen by the Plastics SHO (although be aware out of hours they can be ENT SHOs cross covering).

If you do go to A+E, you're likely to get seen by someone junior anyway so you may need to create a bit to see someone that may have some idea about it.

Well having visited the GP and A and E either both of them were highly versed in tendon related hand injury's, or they were not. My opinion is the latter, although I have an appointment with the hand clinic in about 1 week. I'll let you know how that pans out.

Will.

You probably will have to make quite a fuss at A&E for something as minor as a finger tendon. I went in the day after I fucked my knee in a car crash with blatant instability and I didn't even get seen by an ortho!

This would be bad enough, but it's amde even worse by the fact I told them that I thought I'd torn my PCL.

Guess who was right???
