does anyone have access to partition magic or one that they could sell me at a nominal fee :wink: . does anyone know if it's any good? too much hassle to reformat windows xp. can't find any bootdisks for xp on the whole of the web! want to run win2000 n xp on same machine. xp on at the mo.

have a look at MS Virtual PC - you can allocate a partition where you can install any windows OS (and linux now as well). The "virtual pc" runs in a window on your main OS - works well, is used heavily where I work.

yes got your mail have now got virtual pc on my pc, but it won't let u run an earlier operating system as the virtual system. ie. it will run 2000 n have xp as the virtual OS, but it won't run xp n let 2000 be the virtual system. wil u ask someone at yours to c if this is the case or am i just bein stupid. if u remember all the shit i had wi my pc when i bought it, which was incompatible memory by the way, as soon as they said it was right i made schoolboy error n stuck xp on the lot. never get mad when u've had to take your pc in 4 times

You should be able to run an older OS as the guest:

From Microsoft's site:

To run Windows 95 as a guest OS on a Windows 2000 host requires 500 MB of free disk space and 128 MB of free memory (96 MB for the host and 32 for the guest).
To run Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 as guests concurrently on a Windows XP host requires 1.5 GB of disk space (1 GB + 500 MB) and 256 MB of memory (128MB + 64 MB + 64 MB).
To run Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 as guests separately on a Windows XP host requires 1.5GB of disk space (1GB + 500 MB) and 192 MB of memory (128MB + 64MB).

u c blubba. knowhere is 2000 mentioned along wi xp. think it's coz they use the same drivers for bootin n won't let u load an older OS on top of xp. microsoft knobs! nothin to do wi my incompetence at all.  :wink:

Those were just some example, not a full list. You should have no problems with 2k.

If you look at this page it says:

To run both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro simultaneously as guests on a Windows XP Professional host:
Hard disk space = 2.5 GB (500 MB + 2 GB)
Required RAM = 320 MB (64 MB + 128 MB + 128 MB)


So you can definitely do it.

never sent a PM so didn't know. when i try to load 2000 virtual pc says 'this cd-rom is from an older version of windows than u r presently using. setup functionality from this disk will be disabled' arrgh, wot the fuck!!! am tryin 2 put on the win 2k which u ghosted for me. it works, it's on my laptop. am tryin it both as a bootable n non-bootable disc. will any of your boys know how to do it step-by step, any common errors etc?? they love a challenge blubba.

I reckon the problem might be that you're using the ghosted win2k image - you prolly need a win2k install disc?

Going back to the partition thingy, I'm sure you can get the boot disks for XP off microsoft website (or the program that creates them - 6 disks it is) and using them you can create or delete partions where-ever you want. Unsure how to duel boot. Maybe put win2000 on first and then xp on after?

cheers owen. this was my first port of call. the setup disks don't get rid of xp they just allow u to set up xp without a bootable disk. for everything else it's a good site. just doesn't have xp reformattin disks.

There are four different versions so you need to get the right one.
Once booted up from disks you have the option to partition your hard drive up.
If you need any more advive regarding winxp boot drop us a pm. Don't know about duel boot but do a search on the microsoft website

Boot Disks For Win 2000: (4 disks required)
Explore the win 2k cd, there is a folder called boot disk, in there are the boot disk utilities. If running from dos use the MAKEBOOT or if running in windows use MAKEBT32, follow the prompts (make sure you have 4 formatted blank floppy's first) and Voila.

install win 2k after win xp: found this guide here
