I'm after a new lens for my Cannon 400D. I only have the standard 18-55mm lens and and am after something for longer range shots as in surfing, birds (tweet tweet not ladies) etc...

Any recommendations or advice would be great, I'm also after something at the cheaper end of the scale.

has some good suggestions, although surfing has a tricky combo of fast moving (or not so fast in my case) subjects often quite far away, and with tricky lighting to deal with. A good lens for dealing with this is unlikely to be at the cheaper end.
