Coffee Bean Grinders
May 02, 2010, 08:10:51 pm
Does anyone have any recommendations for a Manual (ie elbow grease, not electric) burr grinder?

I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells manual ones, they all seem to be electric and blade.  The Whittards one gets royally slagged in th eonline reviews.

It needs to be fairly sturdy as I want it for spices.

a big fuck off pestle & mortar? You can't get any  more manual than that.

That's what I do at present but cinnamon, dried chillies and coriander seeds are a pain in the arse.  Hence a less labour intensive manual approach for some stuff.

fatboyslimfast has (or had when I lived in his vacant residence) a massive granite pestle and mortar which was deep and tall, with a rough surface to both contact surfaces. That was a breeze for every kind of shit, even hard coriander seeds.

Not used better since, and I suspect Jamie Oliver probably pimps a similar thing now. Or keep an eye out in TKMaxx as they usually have something similar - but ensure it has that non-shallow profile and surface roughness or shit will spill all over.

Got a cheap one from Amazon in the end, works pretty well.

Which one? I've been looking for a cheap, effective spice grinder. Don't mind if it's electric or manual.

not sure abt manual as it sounds like tpp much hard work

we use a krups model £20, small and "manual" as you control the blades

I got one of these.

Obviously at that price it isn't a top model, but so far it's done well with all the spices I've put through it.  And it's adjustable too, and a burr grinder.  For the price, I'm quite pleased with it (so far).

Bought my girlfriend a beautiful antique coffee grinder for her birthday. Had a couple of months of drinking lovely freshly ground coffee until one day she couldn't find the pestle and decided to use it to grind curry spices.
:badidea:

Now every cup of grumpy mule organic espresso has a non to subtle taste of curry goat about it. Anyone got any idea how to clean that shit out? Or is it fucked?

Sorted now, ran some cheapo coffee beans through to drag out the spice oils. Took a while but it seems alright now.
