Malham Parking
April 30, 2010, 05:49:02 pm
Posted this on the other channel but thought I'd better post here as well for completeness.

It's going to be a busy weekend at Malham so just a quick reminder to NOT park at the Cove Centre.
There's been a number of incidents with the guy who owns the house at the top end of the car park over the past couple of years; he's regularly seen people pissing in front of his house, he's been unable to get his trailer in because of cars restricting the turning space into his yard, and just recently a couple who dossed in the car park overnight gave him a load of abuse when he came out and found them both taking a piss outside his house.
The access to Malham has always been far more tenuous than most people appreciate; the Parish council believe that visiting climbers do nothing for the local economy, and many of them are very anti-climbing, it's only through the actions of the YDNP and the BMC that we still have access. The guy who owns the house is a prominent member of the Parish council. Also historically he had no official right of access to his house via the Cove Centre drive - this has now been resolved and he his within his rights to start locking the gates (which he has threatened to do).
So if you don't want to jeopardize access to this crag, or see you car trapped on the wrong side of a locked gate you'll park elsewhere and make anyone you see parking at the Cove Centre aware of the situation also.
Extra brownie points can be earned by spending some money in the village (world's best scones at the Old Barn Cafe), and at the snack van at Goredale (run by the guy who owns the house at the CC).
