Interesting short piece on iJobs and the photo everyone's been using this week:

(I still think it looks like he's holding up a cardboard mask on a of his own face on a stick.)

This piece from the FT covers similar ground, but also mentions that he delayed having cancer surgery and tried alternative treatments which may have allowed time for the cancer to become incurable, very sad.  http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/1cc07d6c-fb83-11e0-9587-00144feab49a.html#axzz1bQ30ssmA

Samsung 'announce' devices to receive Android update (will be eagerly awaited by many as whilst for example the SII is dual core, its running Android 2.3 which doesn't have any tweaks to make the most of the additional power).

This really is the most fucking retarded thing I have seen this year, a USB handset......for a phone!  :wall:

Just goes to show that some people are dumb enough to buy anything.

Wikipedia blackout to protest SOPA/PIPA

The former (SOPA) has already effectively been killed but PIPA has the same implications (fucking around with DNS being a major problem).

Interesting

You beat me to it Slackers!
I saw this last night and was gob-smacked - the future is nigh!!  :ninja:

I wonder when we will start to see this in handsets, or if that is even viable in the short/medium term??
The guys in this video go to great lengths to stress that it is realistic in terms of cost but then I guess that is subjective...

I wonder which manufacturer we will see if from first?

Apple ditches Google Maps from iOS6 (but provides an alternative).

Microsoft Surface tablet.

If I've read it right, the smart cover is also the keyboard.

Yup - keyboard(and trackpad)/Cover is 3mm thick and comes with moving keys or not...
Also reading the spiel, two flavours of tablet, one ARM and one x86 - the latter is 4-5mm thicker but basically same architecture as a PC. ARM one is slightly heavier than iPad but a mm or so thinner. Mg case whatever that means!

Interesting move - as if they've got the hardware right it'll do well - as W8 is good (from my testing) and perfect for touchscreens.... Undermines the laptop market even more.

Also interesting as IBM and HP have effectively given up the PC hardware market but MS are moving back in.... maybe had a good look at Apples revenue figures!

MS hardware history has a mixed reputation... xbox good, zune bad...

Better photo of the cover/keyboard:

Be interesting to see how usable it is.

A powerful opinion...

...has resulted in consequences fo nVidia in China (quite how this has less to do with open source as stated in the article I'm not sure, as if the drivers were open source nVidia wouldn't be telling China it would cost them shit loads to recompile the drivers :-\ ).

Full video is quite interesting, very focused individual....

Not done bad for a hacking project he started himself really, the desktop market is about the only place Linux isn't ubiquitous.

All I see is an iPad locked in landscape, with a non detachable keyboard cover...

AKA.... A laptop. (actually a net book).
