How to choose new MTB tyres 20 x 1.9
January 15, 2010, 02:56:21 pm
We try to keep off tarmac as much a possible and the tyres on my littleones new bike are almost slick.

So I am looking for some tyres for in Font Forest (hopefully the alps this summer as well), so needs to be able to deal with some mud, sand, rock, etc
not just cycle lanes  ;D .Oh, and weather usually doesn't stop us MTBing though too much ice did shorten the ride last week.

Anyway could people give me advice (or web links to decent advice) about what tread I should be looking at and what brands,
oh and what else should I be thinking about looking out for regarding tyres?

What size tyre does your little one need? If it's anything other than 26" then you're pretty limited. Or were you after tyres for your bike as well??

If there's one topic guaranteed to kick off an argument it's this one!

So, for what it's worth, I'm a big fan of specialized tyres, partickerly:

Great all rounder...........

They are for my son's 20" tyres. TBH I think they are the only thing that's really letting his bike down.

I am really happy with the tyres that came with my bike, had a little problem with hitting deep sand fairly fast whilst turning :-S  didn't fall off, but averting falling off, nearly hit a tree  :-( I think though it's more me needing to learn how to deal with the sand.

If you could give me ideas of things to look for, that would be a help.

20" tyres? You're going to be limited to BMX tyres there I think. Off the top of my head, I don't know of a 20" tyre with a MTB style tread.

I don't think there's any tyre that will handle well in deep sand - just hold tight and hope for the best!

How about this or this?

Neither are x1.9 but I suspect both will work fine.
