Hmm. You can't use a previous catalogue. In that case it's really just for testing, I'm not starting again...

they did that with the version 2 beta. it's fair enough. i'll try it on a few images and see how it handles.

Noise reduction and improved RAW algorithms seem good. If the final version has correction for barrel/ pincushion distortion and soft proofing I'll be happily handing over hard cash.

Have they patched support together for Linux yet?

I was in the process of moving from iView to Aperture.

Aperture can't do what I really want though (at least I don't think it can), which is tethered shooting that allows you to view the shot with a decent grid - a bit like the Photoshop View>Show>Grid screen.

Basically, I want the equivalent of seeing the shot through an artificial ground glass screen with horizontal and vertical lines.

Can you do that with Lightroom?

sounds like something Capture One would do, no? I have no idea if it does…

I didn't think it was, but apparently it is. I haven't watched it all but if you can switch to the crop function you get a choice of overlays including a grid.

Ta, I will study later...

As an aside, have you ever hired a digital back for your MF camera?  I've been thinking about borrowing a Phase One.  I assume you could import those files via Lightroom rather than Capture One...

(I've got Capture One LE, but I've never really bothered using it.)

No, I've got a Mamiya 645protl which is the manual focus version, I don't think any of the backs are compatible.

Since the D3x etc were released second-hand prices are tumbling though. I'm seriously thinking of swapping the body for the AFD and getting a P25. Another six months to a year and they should be pretty affordable - 3-4k now.

Capture one/ Phase one integration is supposed to be pretty good.

They were like 15 grand a couple of years back.  Wow...

I just want super big clean images for some poster-sized (around A2) specsheets.  I was going to do it on film, but when you add up all the scanning required it'll probably end up cheaper to hire a P+65 for 2 days.

Yeah, I use a Blad.

I've going to see the hire people as they've not tested Phase One backs with the Flex Body.

I might try a 903SWC too - they're meant to be the shit.

Smaller, older sensor, but only £1500!

Like I said, another year and these will be worth fuck all, just because a Sony whatever has more pixels... crazy.

I'd heard that the import in LR3 was a big step backwards from 2, i.e. slow and clunky.

Anyone used it yet?

No specifics but a lot of the tutorials I've watched seem to use photo mechanic for import for speed (is bridge an alternative, I've heard mention but never bothered)...

You can probably find out in a few weeks Bubba  ;D

Hmm. I've played with it in the beta release, and thought it was an improvement. I doubt very much if the actual import is slower given the increases in speed elsewhere, just that the interface is a little more involved.I thought it was a good thing - I'm sure once your default is set it'll be just a case of clicking ok threes times like it always was.

The other option is for instant imports is shooting tethered.

Bridge is log. Not used mechanic but why introduce another stage to the process? I use LR for the full workflow now, card to customer.

Not quite. Guess they had to hold something back for LR 4.

Itscertainly not relevant for me that for sure but from what I've seen if you're mass importing then it saves a significant amount of time has very good backup facilities etc.
I think lightroom seems pretty slow at importing things already but maybe I'm just being impatient.

Id agree -- Lightroom all the way unless I have to use PS specifically for something that I cant get done in Lightroom (which unless Im doing a portrait for print or something like that is not all that often)

Even mini bridge in CS5 sucks - its ridiculously slow at enumerating and rendering the thumb nails. My computers pretty fly so youd expect it to be fairly quick

On a separate note, if anyones using CS5, ACR 6.1 has just been released

LR and ACR use the same rendering engine - updates are always parallel.

I don't have any issue with LR import speed old or new. You can start developing the first file whilst the rest are being imported. I suspect photo mechanic is used by folk rapidly trying to cull 2000 shots from a football match down to three selects.

Bridge is slow, I only use it these days for once in a blue moon for keywording to make sure they're still readable by adobe shit in the future, for example when lightroom finally gives you soft proofing etc. On a similar note, can you apply ICC profiles to files in LR?

Anyone wanting a decent free and fast image file browser could do worse then checking out faststone.
