Losing Leg Muscle
October 01, 2009, 12:10:18 pm
Have lost a fair amount of blubber recently and it is apparent that my lower half is rather beefy. The result of playing ice hockey for a number of years.

Other than avoiding playing hockey (which I am doing, soloely concentrating on climbing), is there a way to target muscle loss in my thighs and calves or is it simply a case of it naturally balance out over time (any idea how long?).

I have no calves, I have come to the conclusion it is because i am flat footed so maybe if you walk on your heels every where. this is a bonus for climbing but shit when i have to wear shorts!!

um a resident doctor may come along and correct me - but i'm guessing that to lose significant muscle bulk from any one region (i.e. your legs) you're going to have to lose it from all over - then build up where you want it (i.e. arms etc).

i think lance armstrong had the inverse problem in that he had a bulkier upper body from doing triathlon (swimming) in his youth -  his chemotherapy resulted in all over muscle wastage - which meant he was much lighter when he rebuilt his legs afterwards.

not that i'm suggesting chemo, but any diet to reduce muscle bulk is likely to inhibit you gaining upper body strength.

Isn't it more like starve yourself while working out the upper body. Your body will eat away at the bit's you're not working out to get the energy it need to build the bits you are working out.

Experiment with radical diets and extreme training regimes and post what works, because I am fairly confident that you are the first hockey to climbing crossover on the forum. Alternatively, if you boulder at less than font 7b across all styles i.e. slabs, walls, steep walls, continuous overhangs between 30 and 50 degrees and roofs: celebrate your chunky thighs and get all the nails highball  slabs  done while you have the legs for them. I would suggest Velvet silence and Angels share at Black rocks for a start.
After that carefully reduce weight from your legs by loosing muscle mass while adding it to your upper body as and when you realise that technique though honed to its limit 'aint going to help. If, of course, you are trying to move your bouldering grade from 8c+ to 9a ignore this fatuous post.
