Homemade kneebar pad thingy
September 03, 2009, 03:54:29 pm
Has anyone had a shot at making one of those kneebar pad type jobbies?
I need one to milk a rest on a project route, and thought I’d have a go at making it proper Gucci.
So, where can I buy stealth rubber, what glue should I use, and is it best to use straps or one of those knee support things?
Any other tips would be much appreciated.

Cheers all.

Dan V has a genius homemade one constructed from a butchered Anastasi velcro with buckles attached

I have a neoprene leg thingy. It works ok, but I'm sure it could be improved with tape and stealth rubber if I was inclined that way

knee pads from b&q?

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9371876&fh_view_size=10&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB&fh_search=knee+pad&fh_eds=%C3%9F&isSearch=true

dont do the version i have for the diy but once you're done can easily unstrip the velcro to finish the route

I believe judge banks made a kneebar for their trip to rocklands - think it was something like a neoprene support with a shit load of that shoo goo stuff spread on it. I'm sure he'll elaborate when they're back (next week?).

You'll be needing some of this then.  8)

Dylan has one the same, it seems pretty good. I wondered how it'd work with some of that non slip rubber dotty sheet you can get for dashboards etc, shoe goo should stop it disintegrating, maybe.

Apart from the upskill offerings, are there any other pro-solutions? I understand 5.10 made some but it was suggested this wouldn't make it into production?

Talking to Barrows recently at the tor about knee pads and he produced one of these  http://www.libertymountainclimbing.com/shop/product.asp?p=9296&pg=1&c=2317&o=0&s=2
Size small fitted my sparrow legs perfectly.  It's a neoprene pad with velcro straps and what seemed like a very sticky rubber pad.  The rubber extends well down over the knee which is good for those tenuous knee bars.
Unfortunately the above supplier doesn't ship to UK. I'm working on a few other suppliers in US.

Good opportunity for a UK importer to pick these up....Betaclimbing (Rob)?

Yeah, I  got given that one and it seems decent, though the Americans all rate the ones from Rock and Resole in Colorado as the best. Unfortunately that doesn't help us brits much. I emailed 5.10 about rubber sheets to make my own, and they said talk to the resole people, however no-one seems to have the appropriate stuff in stock at the moment...

I got the link from Drew, but no.

I've given CragX a nudge, it might be worth expressing your interest too. Given its FiveTen we might just about be able to get one before the Cornice is going out of season again.

Be careful ordering the 5.10 pad. I've tried the one that's been floating round Sheffield for a while, but couldn't fit it on my thigh and was several inches off doing the straps up.

I (actually, my Mum) made my own bespoke kneepad from neoprene and a thin (2mm) sheet of Vibram rubber.

Has been extensively tested and works well. I have enough vibram/neoprene left over to make another 5 or so of these, and would be willing to take orders if anyone's keen. I'd need to charge to cover the costs and use of my mum's time - say £25 each? Let me know if anyone's keen

Stop being useless - i gave you the number of my mate with a 1m^2 sheet of spare 5.10 rand rubber. He's in Sheffield every fri-sunday so there's no reason not to get some off him and make your own.

To the OP. I've a decathlon thigh support with 2mm of 5.10 rubber shoo-goo'd to the outside, and to make it really guchi, 2mm of foam from my kayak knee brace on the inside. Lush!

Hi Stu

I attempted to PM you from my phone but not sure if it worked. I'd take one of your mum's pads if she makes more. Cheers.
