*Before reading this, think of something funny. Like bouldering.

As a caver, and one who occasionally attends rescues, I can't help but hope climbers DON'T start following Dave's lead as is suggested they do on the program (after jingling). Taking lead falls down caves would be a shit idea.

There was also the usual negative discussion of caving and cavers. Talking about how dark and cold and wet and confined and dangerous the cave is may make the program more sensational, but it's also totally pointless, and largely untrue.

1. It's not confined. It's a big section of cave
2. It's about 8 degrees the whole year round, which is roughly in line with the average surface temperature. Go in winter and it's comparatively warm underground. Climbers sometimes prefer even colder conditions to this.
3. It's only dark if you don't take a headtorch. In which case you're a dick.
4. Yes lots of caves are wet. Like rain. Or baths. It won't bite you
5. Caving isn't particularly dangerous. New routing underground is roughly as dangerous as doing it on sea cliffs, but more remote. Obviously, we should always avoid danger. That's why we only climb inside.

To it's credit, they had a short speech from ye bearded caver, who rightly compared it to mountaineering (or maybe big walling) in the way it should be treated.

Nice looking sport route eh.

Rant over.

Not sure if this is completely the right place, but the iOS iplayer app had a big upgrade last night that allows you to download iplayer content to your device for up to 30 days... Only iOS at the moment, but Android updates supposed to be soon....

which reminds me.

Watched this on iplayer a couple of days ago. Not really into soldier shows but this was a brilliant insight into life in Afghan and the strength of character sometimes required.

Not watched 1 or 2 but will be doing. Maybe tonight. If I fancy it. Dunno yet. We'll see. Right then. I'm off.

hopefully today's The Today Programme will be available to listen to again

It featured Charlotte Green reading out the naughty bits from a James Bond novel - I nearly walked into a lamp post and had to wait to "calm down" a bit before walking into the office

A repeat from a few years back, but if you've not seen it, you really should. Incredible.

I've been partial to a bit of Inspector Montalbano's fast chattering in Italian on iPlayer.

Doesn't seem to be on iPlayer, shame, I'd like to watch that.

Edit:
Found a 45min version on it YouTube, called 'Solo: Lost at Sea' looks like a NatGeo edit not the BBC one

It was broadcast on BBC Four on the 12th, I expect it was then available on iPlayer for about a week.

I note that the documentary Man On Wire was on BBC4 last night, which hopefully means its on iplayer. Get it watched, whether or not you've seen it, its beyond belief. Synopsis - 1970's (?), the world's Frenchest man sets up illicit highwire tightrope walks around the world, culminating in an Ocean's Eleven-esque operation to walk between New York's Twin Towers.  :o

I caught one line last night before I turned it off thinking I'd rather watch the whole thing on iPlayer. It was an American cop talking to TV at the time about how he couldn't coax him off the wire, so he told his mate to tell him that if he didn't come off he'd be plucked off the wire using a helicopter:

"He relayed this information to Phillipe in French, them being from France and all".

:agree: brilliant film despite there only being virtually no film footage of the actual act itself.  Saw it at the Showroom when it came out and was very impressed.
