Nice stu, what lens is that? Makes perspective go a bit odd.

Canon 10-22 - pricey but worth every penny (saving for the F2.8 24-70 at the minute)

What rock is that stu?

Tuff of some sort? looks nice.

sod designing pumps Chris, you shoulda become a geologist...

good guess - its a slightly metamorphosed coarse ash crystal tuff to be precise (at least that's what the geological map in front of me says)

quite nice stuff to climb on - lots of thin nodules and nubbin's etc to crimp / stand on - although it can make the trad lines a bit hairy as your not sure what will snap off yet (newly developed crag so bits still coming off at an alarming rate)

Cool pictures as always stuey. Nice looking tuff too.

The first picture would be awesome if you could brighten the crag/climber side a bit...

Do you ever get jaded with that backdrop?

Just remembered you said some of the bouldering was on tuff, and the holds look a bit like what you find on Tableland at Bishop and in Clark Canyon, so educated guess.

Wouldn't catch me doing trad routes on it though, way too snappy.

Got any decent beta for a trip to the Tarn?, places to stay, guidebooks to get me all sweaty in anticipation, recommended routes / areas etc... - it's a possible venue for a trip in Sept (currently undecided between there, Ceuse and Kalymnos)

Never did the european sport climbing thing whilst living in the UK so figured it's high time to come give it a go

cheers

Stu

Climbing is world class. The rock is dolomitic limestone and many of the routes are on pockets, but there are some great routes following cracks, overlaps, aretes etc too. We were there in May and the temps were ideal and there was no seepage. Later in the summer it may be rather hot, but Sept should be good. About half the climbing is morning shade and half afternoon shade. Routes vary from 15m-70m single pitches! Most are in the 20m-35m range. Bolting is often very spacey on the upper halves, especially on the long routes.
We stayed in a really nice gite about 10km upstream of the climbing. Fairly cheap as it was a two person gite, in an old converted mill building on the river. I could find you the gite number if needed.
There seemed to be some campsites close to the river. One at La Malene is possibly the nearest to the crags.
The nearest villages to crags are La Malene and Le Vignes. Both have basic food shopping, but nearest supermarket is a fair drive.
On non-climbing days you can always hire canoes and paddle down stream from various start and finish points. Very beautiful valley with loads of wildlife.

I would also fully recommend Rodellar for a Sept trip. Loads of super steep and juggy stuff on tufas in a beautiful fairly remote valley. I got on better with the climbing here, as the cruxes didn't involve small pockets.

Cheers Bonjoy - gite number would be good as I'm gonna be with the misses and these flight attendants don't exactly like slumming it...
