Cheers, was pleased they came out at all as the face was in the shade and was expecting to have dark silhouette's/nothing.  Guess the "Active D Lighting" is working/doing its thing there.

That cloud will be doing more work than the D-lighting - think of it like a giant softbox over the scene. Nice shot - I think it'd benefit from a slight crop to tidy up the corners though.

That arete looks cool. Almost as photogenic as Steve's Arete at Mt Lemmon. Google images alone has dozens of pics of it.

Cheers JB, that would be down to serendipity rather than my timing, and would explain why many of the other shots weren't so well exposed.

I always umm and err over cropping as I can rarely make my mind up so just stick the full picture up on Flickr as is.

Pretty much my top tip for climbing photography is this - never zoom out unless as a last resort. Exhaust all other options first.

It wasn't so long ago that extreme wides (<24mm on FX, <16mm on DX) were seen as exotic optics that required a lot of skill to use. Nowadays everyone has a 18mm/12mm or wider from the get-go. The problem is they fool you into thinking you've got 'the shot' because what attracted your eye is within the viewfinder. The skill is to show only that and get rid of the guff - its a cliche, but its as much about what you leave out as what you leave in.

On that shot specifically, the overhang extreme top right is distracting, and bringing the two sides in a bit tightens things up.

Had a go at cropping the above, took a bit off the bottom too to exclude the belayers helmet, added a small tweak to the levels too.  Think I do indeed like this more without the "noise", feels like it draws you into the picture a bit more now...

Thanks again for the advice JB (just got to put it into practice when out snapping/before posting pics!).

I would have left the skyline crack top left in - gives context of the buttress being a pinnacle. In fact I'd assumed you'd shot from that angle to include it. Otherwise nice.

Ignore the idiot on flickr talking about CA - you can't see CA at that zoom level unless its chronic. There is a slight fringe that is likely being generated in the processing somewhere. LR clarity slider overcooked?. Oh no, you can't run LR on linux  Did you do any local contrast enhancement or sahdow lightening in gimp? I don't think its an issue anyway - only noticeable to camera geeks.

I did try leaving it in first of all, and left it as a wallpaper all day yesterday, but decided to try without today and preferred it without.

Couldn't see anything much anyway (to my untrained eye  :P).

No, haven't sussed out how to do that quickly yet, I've played with dodging and burning (non-technical terms for same thing?) before but always have trouble around the edges of areas.  Could really do with getting the tablet working properly that I have but can't be arsed.

In a fashion, but note that the quality of usage is "Garbage" for two versions of Lightroom (including the recent 3.0), and at best is "Bronze".

Besides which I have a XP running on VirtualBox for some stats packages and have installed something under there (can't remember what it was, a friends copy of Photoshop I think).  Haven't actually used it yet mind.

Corrected! Whilst its there I never use it at home, only at work when I have to do some quick and dirty sample size calculations using software that isn't available for anything but M$.

Excellent pics, Slacks. Going back a page what's the runout slab? San Melas? Doesn't look like Western Peak. I'm stumped.

At a guess going from the tags on the Flickr page, I would suggest it is "living at the speed" at Stanage?  ;)
