Why are apostrophes turning into ’ when they go into HTML?

coz the HTML character set does not contain an apostrophe so has to have a special magic word for it - are you having a problem getting the apostrophe to show up when not viewing in HTML mode, or just curious for the sake of it?

I cut and pasted text from word into dreamweaver - and in there it looks like a normal apostrophe, but comes out on the live site as the funny characters....

Doesn't Dreamweaver have a "clean up the shit that word generates" function? That might help
Could well be the difference between a proper curled apostrophe (like you'd want to print in a letter) and the little straight one like this ' that simpler character sets use.

You could save the word doc as a simpler type of file (like .txt) and that should get rid of any fancy character shit - then cut and paste to DW
