Signs a new deal, fans come back on board, speculation stops, plays out the season, transfer window comes around and off he goes to Chelsea. Shrek gets to play, Utd get full price for him, Coleen gets a move to London - everyone's happy.

Quite possibly. Just because he's signed a contract it certainly doesn't mean he's staying. Just that his value's been increased.

Aye - giving him an extended contract on doubled wage might just be ManU ensuring that, if he does still want to leave in the summer, they get more compensation.

Its similar to how many footballer's contracts these days are heavily weighted with massive wages at the end. For example, supposedly Ronaldo's salary at Real Madrid ramps up from a relatively "low" level to something enormous in the final year - with the £/wk figure generally quoted just being an average that assumes he stays for the duration. It's because clubs know footballers will probably leave after a couple of years, regardless of what they've signed, but if the contract has huge wages for the final years then the buying club will have to pay more compensation to buyout that period.
