Myguide satnav / TomTom
June 04, 2009, 02:50:59 am
Has anyone on here successfully installed Tom Tom onto a MyGuide satnav (ebuyer 49.99)? I've looked online for a tutorial but most of the directions seem like cobbled together forum posts. I'd obviously love the saving over a TomTom unit but I'm a bit short on time so if its a lot of hassle I'll get over it...

Jim/Dobbin/Dr Pinch?

Cheers.

Have you looked at refurbished Tomtoms - can be very cheap. Not sure those can take an SD card so check the internal memory if you need Europe maps.

The V1 and V2 of the TomTom One have a card slot, the V3 doesn't.

I had one on an orange Sp500 (I think?) and found the phone itself unreliable, a microswitch in the handsfree broke and the speaker hasn't worked since. Repair is a fortune.

please don't buy from total pda, I'm pretty p*ssed off right now; pre installed speed camera database wasn't on it, called them they just passed the buck and said basically its tomtoms fault ring them or else I could send it back and once they were done I'd get a new one.

Obviously, currently I'm short on time and that's why I bought from them and not another site where I'd have to put pocketGPS camera locations on myself. The convenience outweighed the slight extra cost.

Its now fixed fairly easily but an hour was spent on the phone that I just didn't want to waste on this. I just hate it when people sell things as one thing and then pass the buck like this. They're selling the item to me, its their responsibility to sort it out. There wasn't a sorry in sight!

You didn't pay for cams did you? All for free at that link I posted.

The 3rd party setup is better anyway but agree with Great British Customer Service being a total pain.

are tomtom units always shit?

I just thought I'd turn mine on and stick a pin code on it so when inevitably some chav steals it, he'll at least have to work for a few minutes before selling it down the pub.

Anyway, connect to TomTom home as it tells me and lo and behold "This map cannot be used on this device", now I may be being stupid but given its the Western Europe map supplied in the bleeding box I'm thinking it "f*cking can be used on this device"....

Bag of balls.

tip for anyone with a tomtom unit with a sd card slot;
take the original card and copy the contents to your hard drive then put the original card somewhere safe, buy a nice new sd card for fuck all and copy the contents of the original card to this. Then plug into tomtom home and update everything, then uninstall tomtom home from your computer as you no longer have any use for it.
Then if you have a different map you can delete the map installed and copy the new map on, then use a small app to patch it and violla, updated and backed up with latest maps and original sd card (untouched) for warrenty issues.
Just don't leave it in your car

Good advice. My TT One XL came with the maps on the internal memory and an empty SD slot but I still did pretty much the same as you, i.e. took an image of the internal memory to my PC.

then uninstall tomtom home from your computer as you no longer have any use for it.
You can patch Tomtom Home so then you can download the mapshare updates to the latest maps ... if you're bothered.

The one XL I got had it all on the SD card, weird?
I didn't want to put the map share on as I've not heard great things about it so didn't bother patching tomtom home

Did you have Euro maps? Mine came with UK & Ireland so it can all fit on the internal - I think the Euro maps are too big and have to come on a card.

Anyone got experience of using a decent phone for navigation in the US without data / 3G.

Some apps say you can download offline maps, but how reliable are they? Hiring a satnav for 2 weeks seems expensive. Will have wifi access every evening.

Navmii or Herewego get recommended.

Unless you're planning ahead for Brexit when roaming charges will appear - I just use the sat nav on the phone (google maps etc..) as IMHO its so much better than any sat nav I've used...
