Chapel Head access
May 02, 2009, 05:40:47 pm
Tried to find out on the BMC website and it mentions perigrines. Are there any and can I climb there at the moment?

The FRCC are as helpful as the BMC.

Signed. This site will be regularly monitored and the restriction may be lifted if the birds do not nest.

Sorry Dylan, not much use.

Thanks for trying. I think there is a pdf on the BMC site but I don't have a reader on my phone

Yes, it says much the same:  Restrictions unless the birds don't nest and then we'll put a sign up.   :wank:

There's a voluntary restriction on it from 1st March to 30th June. This is in place every year unless its announced that the birds have not nested - if the restriction is lifted the BMC will publicise this online etc aswell as signing it at the crag.
So I wouldn't climb there (if you value the crag access agreement) unless its announced that the peregrine have not nested.

I'm not being funny but did you read my post or any of GCW's?  Yes there is a ban, but ONLY when the birds are nesting.  We have been trying to find out if this is the case or not.

My point was that it would have been announced publicly if there was no bird nesting, so you can assume its still banned, rather than having to ask on here to find out. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Dylan,

I looked on the BMC's site myself too and assumed that was the only thing to go by on for access restrictions at Chapel Head.  So, if you manage to find out if there aren't any peregrines nesting I would also like to know.  :please:

Thanks.

An update, just checked the BMC's site and have found this:

http://www.thebmc.co.uk/News.aspx?id=3064

Peregrines nesting at Chapel Head and the restrictions may even carry on past the end of June...

Even though the ban is on doesn't this only relate to part of the crag hence all the red and green markers?  Have checked bmc but it is unspecific.  Any local decent knowledge please?

I'll check it out in person sometime this weekend, I only live about 20 minutes drive away.  My feeling is that the whole crag will probably be closed though...

I mailed the BMC and got this response from Guy Keating.

"The birds appear to be nesting in the middle of the climbing area – so unfortunately all the climbing is out of bounds for the time being.

The site is being monitored, and the LDNPA have assured us the restriction will be lifted as soon as the chicks fledge the nest.

As soon as I get word of this happening, I will post something on UKC and change the RAD site"

Seems pretty clear cut
