Where to train around Southampton
April 29, 2009, 02:25:32 pm

Recently moved down here having left edinburgh to be with the soon to be wife.

BUT, gutted I no longer have ratho and alien on the doorstep.

So, there any home boards in the area people are willing to share or anyone on here know where I can find a proper training facility that is within a reasonable distance and doable for even one evening a week? I've been to Calshot, st mary's and purbrook and they just don't cut the mustard. Beginning to realise just how lucky I was.

If you'd taken a second to read the Sticky thread at the top of this sub-forum you would have found the Board Share Directory (although whether it contains any current Southampton denizens I've no idea).

I did and it doesn't

Unless I've missed something which wouldn't be that unusual to be honest

Apologies then, wasn't clear that you'd been there already (and I like pointing out the obvious!).

Yeah, I'd noticed ...

But it is I who should apologise for not saying I'd looked already

Thanks for the thought

thats your lot im afraid, unless your a student, in which case the uni bouldering room is actually pretty good. tbh, if dont think calshot is good for an indoor wall wall you must be pretty spoilt :P the cave is ace

It's not that I don't think Calshot is good, but it's not great as somewhere for ME to train. The cave is fun but small and the routes are either vertical or very steep with routes in my grade range that are great for me growing big guns but not so great for giving a good steady finger workout. As a very strong climber once said you can get away with a weak body but not with weak fingers.
Someone's sending me a topo for purbrook which will help me start making use of the featured wall

Anyway, I guess I'm going to have to build my own little training board

Cheers

fort pubrook is your best bet then, if you can stand the lighting/humidity you can make some killer circuits in the features room, if only they would clean it once in a while. Admitedly i hate the place but oh well.
(btw the 'cave' i was reffering to is the 14m tall, 10m overhanging area directly opposite the lavs, not the arch on the fake boulder!)
