Its a date.

Gav, I know your accent is a genuine reflection of the area and culture you were brought up in, but can I ask you to make sure that you avoid all phrases and vocabulary that might remind me of Robson Green while we're fishing, please?

the best of tonight's haul

8lb 4oz Don barbel - I watched it move in and pick up the meat. Fuck climbing, this is where the big thrills are at.

other highlights from tonight

tiddler (had a couple this size)

trout caught on on hair-rigged pellet in the dark

hands up who thinks this swim looks fishy
the deep pool by Stevenson Road

typical Stevenson Road chub - had a few of these before heading for (even) more barbely waters

the pause between the pig's head moving over the meat and the rod tip pulling round seemed to last forever

exciting stuff

I had a couple of carps out this weekend. I also had a close encounter with a Buzzard when I was leaving the fishery, I can't believe how close I got, I think it was a youngster.

Yes from Wentworth.

I feel your pain. 3 of us fished the Ribble last night and all we caught was 4 little eels. Got home at 2:30am   :(

First tenkara session of the year down in Ladies Spring Wood on the upper Sheaf - plenty of tiny trout, never caught a big one there - although a couple of spots just look like there should be a monster

first fish of the season - I landed 9, lost 4

biggest fish of the session (yeah; monster!)

smallest fish (pretty typical for that stretch)

saw a kingfisher, dippers, a few mandarins

pretty fucking special to have free fishing in an SSSI

it's easy, and I catch fish

definitely hitting takes that I wouldn't have noticed on a normal rig - either that or I get more takes - either way, good for me

I always enjoyed close range fishing most anyway

tricky in woodland

the presentation is satisfying even if I'm not catching - more so than other types of fishing - I find myself getting really into perfecting the drift for a certain pool only to be pleasantly surprised by a sudden take

Grassholme Resevoir which offers any method trout fishing at a very reasonable price (£13 after 2.30 for four fish). Bailiffs were dubious of my methods which made catching my limit (two rainbows and 2 blue trout) in an hour all the sweeter  :) By the time I'd packed up, all the locals were spinning where I'd been fishing!

any tips for Grassholme, Derwent or similar any method waters up there?

particularly interested in any way that families, kids and non fishing folk can have fun catching fish to eat

I'm likely to end up in the area with lots of kids (2 to 8 yrs) and would like fishing to be involved

Only fished Grassholme but have fished it quite a lot. Lots of people leger here and seem.to catch but I would recommend float fishing worms and sweetcorn. If you want to leger, get hold of some floating PowerBait and use it to pop up yer worms. If spinning I'd opt for small spinners and light line - great fun! I'm up there over Easter weekend and planning to try out some soft plastics....

mad scenes at Barlow trout lakes this evening

had the place to myself and in between a few nice rainbows and tiny browns I had three common carp

pretty strange for carp to be taking artificial flies this early in the season (two on buzzers, one off the top on dry)

luckily the lakes are free of snags and weed at the moment, so my #4 wt set up and a bit of patience worked out OK

at a guess, they were around the 4lb mark

number 2

number 3

if you want your small spinners to cast further - these are pretty good (come in different weights)

mine are more shiny than the photo

used them in the lake district so we could get small Mepps a long way out   - act as a bit of a wire trace as well in case something with teeth comes along

Hi Rob, great work on the carp!! They are great fun on the fly and I imagine especially so on a #4!! :2thumbsup:

Cheers for the tip on weighted leaders too. I've been using these...

https://www.lureheaven.co.uk/spinning-lure-fishing-shop/Street-Tech-Brass-Bullet-Worm-Weights-3956-1.html

...when "throwing" soft plastics for perch and pike.

Fishing has been practically non existent but late evenings are upon us and it's nearly Dingle Season...

We should hook up at some stage!

as mentioned in Power Club and sprayed across social media in general, I have had a couple of decent days spinning for pike at Hassop this week - 4 fish each day and my mate had 4 fish on the day he came

the classic Shakespeare Big S lure did the business

best fish from today - that's a huge net and a 9cm long lure

smallest one from today
