Quickdraw failure
April 13, 2009, 09:59:12 pm
Just thought I'd point this out to all the quickdraw users. I hadn't thought of this happening and quite possibly would have overlooked it. Should probably be seen by as many people as possible. The girl who decked in Australia quarry broke two wrists, her pelvis and fractured her skull and this is what the MRT think did it.

Have a look, it'll only take a minute.

Found out about this years ago, and thus I've only ever used sewn QDs or slings with no elastic bands or similar.

Broken ouch. That's a proper accident, and I hope she mends well.

On the up side, I now feel justified in having splashed out 0,60 euros per Petzl String some time ago (i.e. when 0,60 euros wasn't about £10)

elastic bands are fine when, like any gear your life depends on, you check them before use.

Good heads up Will.

I have rubber bands on my draws, but not as shown in that article.  They loop round the cord and the krab to hold it in place and whats described couldn't happen.  Will post a pic when I have a chance to take one.

Indeed. Quite apt for climbers.

It's all a question of trust. If you cheated to gain instant karma, then real karma will get you.

I guessed from your tagline you would get it.
