So i got a letter from my isp the other say saying that BPI had contacted them about my ip address being listed as sharing music. They say action won't be taken this time as they wont disclose details to the BPI but its possible that if they get a court order they would have to disclose.

Any body had one of these?

I am using transmisson on the mac so if i switch to something that encrypts the data can they still track it if i am sharing stuff?

Should i be worried? It seems its not the downloading they are on about its the seeding of the files?

I'd imagine they still have ways of catching you, since all they need to do is start leeching from you and they will know what you are seeding (although it will be more hit and miss).

Theres no way round this (unless the BPI's 'bots' get booted from the trackers, but they can just start another).

The simple solution would be to not seed, or wait until your ratio tips over to the +ve and then kill that particular torrent (perhaps periodically seeding it again in the future).

got a similar complaint when I was living in Halls of Residence. I just stopped whilst I lived there.

Are you using public or private trackers? Which torrent trackers are you sharing through?

I wouldn't be too worried about it anyway - the worst that will happen is that your ISP will boot you after the BPI whine 3 times to them.

Encrypting the data won't work - the BPI just check the IPs which are easily available.

Peerguardian my help a bit but it's not foolproof by any means.

If you don't mind spending a little money (€45 for a year), then sign up to a darknet like Relakks - you're then effectively untouchable.

I've installed peer guardian now for what its worth.
As for trackers, i just use whatever when i start downloading. Always have.
Ive got a good seeding ratio, so ill lay low and that front for a while.

Ok, where do you find your torrent links from? From the public search engines?

My point is that you're much more likely to get busted on those networks - the invite-only trackers like waffles/what/stmusic are much better. Looks like stmusic.org might still be open invite atm, so get on there.

What sort of stuff are you sharing? Quite mainstream? Just interested to know what they look for really.

I only use btjunkie and mininova.

I generally download newish films, newish albums and 24 one a week. All fairly mainstream.

Just signed up for Stmusic so will give that a go.

THIS might be of interest for the whole filesharing/letter thing... seems the ISP's hate the idea...
