Saw a raccoon - not too unusual in these parts - what was notable though was the fact that it was emerging from my patio doors with a large bag of crisps in its mouth, after opening all the kitchen cupboard doors and shredding the bin... Little bastard...

While climbing in the south lakes at Farleton (a beautiful limestone pavement if you've not been) my dog scared a Roe deer and her Fawn out from the bracken and they shot off down the path at full speed, my little fat terrier in full pursuit. Was very tempted to shout "Fenton, fenton......JC......Fenton!" but there was nobody to hear. Naturally they left my dog for dust, man they can move! Very beautiful animals, was a delight to see them.

"If a hipster twat shouts Fenton in the woods and there's no-one there to hear, is he still a hipster twat ?"

Fiend's thoughts yesterday morning:

"Camera....nah only going to Glen Ogle, shitty sport crags and just two of us, won't get any climbing shots. Hmmm maybe there will be wildlife....and last time there was a Hercules flying down the valley....nah fuck it can't be arsed."

2 hours later, pulled into the parking next to a police jeep with two coppers with binoculars....who pretty soon pointed out the pair of golden fucking eagles they'd been checking the location of  :slap: :slap: :slap:

What flavour?

Do racoons now come in different flavours?

Either garbage or cat-food flavoured.

Can't believe I neglected to write this on here sooner!

About a month ago 3 Red Kites flew over my garden!

Just managed to fire off a few shots of a Chamois outside Rifugio Silvio Agostini at the head of Val d'Ambiez in the Brenta Dolomites last week...

Was out for a run around Derwent the other day and enjoyed a much needed breather watching a couple of stoats just above Ladybower.

Was also sat in my mum's living room the other day having a brew and a sparrowhawk (I think!) landed bang in the middle of the lawn - attacking a mouse.  Sat there for a few minutes with me gawping from the other side of the patio doors.  What surprised me the most was that this was in the middle of St Helens - hardly likely to be the location for Attenborough's next wildlife documentary...

Bit of a crap phone shot but two massive 'monarch of the Glen' stags perfectly silhouetted against a lovely sky on stoney ridge last month.  They really weren't very far away.  Incredible.  Not be long before they're up into the burbage valley I guess.

While climbing near Dornoch in the north east of scotland, we saw 3 Red Kite and later on an Osprey. Pretty great place to climb with spectacular views. However, we were less enamoured with the tick population. That is one section of wildlife i could do without.

Been trying to track down the yellowhammers near my office on my lunch break. Only managed to spot one so far and now they've gone quiet again! Surprisingly elusive for such a prolific chirper!

Try looking near the tops of small trees, the kind you get in hedge lines. That's where they tend to be when I see 'em.

Yeah they often flit before I get anywhere near them, of they're on the other side of the train tracks! How long are they around for?

Resident I think but a not so obvious in winter - duller and quieter.

Word, other than that there's not much around this time of year other than a vocal kestrel fledgling and 20-strong flocks of goldfinches.

Artic hares by the bucket load at Barrow Stones. Usually see a Marsh Harrier several times a week on the South Humber foreshore, presumably one or other of the same pair.

What's up with those goldfinches? When I was a kid, twitching with my I-spy book a sighting was a rarity. Last time I was back home there were bushes full of them. Not a sparrow in sight.

Buzzardtastic. Out on bike in Feteresso Forest, one passed straight overhead twice (may have been the same one?) and saw a deer disappearing into woods.

Buzzard over my garden in Beauchief this morning. Reckon it must live in the woods by the golf course.

A pair of Spotted Flycatchers at Widdop on Monday and bird tick of the year yesterday when I spotted a small flock (10-12) of ring necked parakeets!! After a bit of research, it turns out there a number of breeding pairs in the vicinity of where I saw them... Awesome!
