This little chap (a Rainbow Lorikeet) put in an appearance just above our carport earlier today. We have a horde of these currently working the flowers in some of the eucalypts around here but this was the first time one came out in the open where I could get some decent shots of him/her.

Another little eucalypt has been flowering in the garden and has been bringing the bees in from the hives down the road. Managed to catch one departing loaded with pollen.

Stumbled upon the roost of two Soprano Pipistrelles (I think) earlier today as I was about to climb some uninspiring limestone, they were beautiful and quite furry  :)

Looking for some bird knowledge.

Last week in the southern Dolomites, something that I thought looked like some kind of falcon flew in front of me. Very much falcon-shaped body and wings. Black wingtips, reddish-brown body, so definitely not a mature peregrine. Young peregrine perhaps?

Nothing else I've been able to google looks much like it.

Lanner?

Quite plausible, but I can't find a picture of one in flight seen from above, which is how I saw it, so can't be sure. I was put off by wikipedia's description of the range as "southeast Europe", but I suppose the southern Dolomites just about qualify.

Saw what I think was a couple of kestrels at the popular end last night. Seemed to be based around tippler/dangler area. Can I get a rewind?

Loads and loads of Stoats around up here this year. Usually see a few knocking around but this year is nuts, see them every day.

They introduced wildlife strips around all the fields about three years ago where the farmers are paid to leave a 10m wide strip of land to the wild around every field and the increase in mammal and bird life is amazing.

Check out Brolly´s flickr stream its fucking amazing....

Cheers!  Well when you can't climb anymore you have to turn that obsession into something!  Just checked back in as I remember asking about otters on here and after last weeks trip to Mull finally found some.  Took me over 50 hours to find any but finally when I did they did deliver.  Ironically after spending all my time in isolated places I found them near a busy campsite!?!

Am thinking of doing a bit of climbing photo work.  If anyone needs a photo tog for some new ascents give me a shout!

A fox trotted past (8.5) our campsite about 5m away in the Ishinca Valley (Peru) in the middle of the day yesterday. Picture to follow in a month once I've sorted through them all.

Saw a birdy having a scrap with a magpie today from the top of Chevin Buttress. Dark browny red wings, turning black towards the wingtips. White underbelly. Looked in my bird book and thought it might either be a kite or kestrel. I thought I'd become reasonably good at spotting the Red Kites though now they're common as muck in Yorkshire and that's not what it looked like. Any ideas for sure what it would be?

What size was it compared to the magpie? What shape was the tail?

Miles from a Brolly shot, but I just snapped this off my balcony in Sheffield:

Kestrel vs. Magpie by travelswithmyt4, on Flickr

Noticed it whilst staring through my first roll of slide film which is taped to the glass doors.

Walked within a couple of feet of a horned viper in slovenia completely oblivious, kate following behind let out a shriek and it slithered into a burrow afore i could get a shot. later the same day saw what we think might of been an eagle checking out a glider.

Maybe a touch bigger but not masses. Didn't quite manage to see the tail in flight as it was quite far away. Possibly fan shaped. I'm pretty sure there was no white on the wings so probably a kestrel

Pointy wing tips or rounded, fingery tips? Sounds more like a kestrel from its size.

A Kite would definitely look 'masses' bigger next to a Magenpie.
